Will changing the dizzy affect tune?
I have a d16z6 boosted and tuned at 16psi. My spark plugs went bad and it started sputtering a lot till i changed them and it ran perfect for 300miles and now its sputtering again. I pull them out and they were black or dark in color. Looked like carbon buildup, a lot. So would this be because of the dizzy is retarded too far cause I removed it to let my buddy borrow it for his car and i lined it back up with my previous position the best i could. With a timing light, it was below the timing mark closes to the front end. So i think it might be retarded too far.

And jump the connector that you use to check for DTC's while your timing it. So it resets the advance, otherwise you may melt a piston

Re: Will changing the dizzy affect tune?
You need to resync the timing to whatever it was set at (most likely 16* / 16.5*). The easiest way is to lock the timing through the EMS and use a timing gun. There will almost always be differences between distributors so you can't just put a different distributor in the same spot as the one before it.

Re: Will changing the dizzy affect tune?
Ok so jump the service plug, then set the timing to 16*. Quick question, which of the 3 marks is the 16*? I read another thread and it seems that my timing right now is advanced cause someone said the mark towards the front end is the advance mark. If this is true, then i dont think boosted cars are suppose to be running advance timing right? Cause right now, mine is way past that mark.

Re: Will changing the dizzy affect tune?
And also, will the tune be affected by adjusting the timing of the distributor? Cause theres different firing degrees at different rpms

It's painfully obvious that you don't know the first thing about setting ignition timing. Either pick up a factory service manual and figure out how to do it yourself, or take it back to your tuner and have them do it for you.

The white is tdc
The red marks are 18 16 and 14 may be different for a single cam.
Counter clock wise is retard clock wise is advance.
This is looking at the timing from the pulley side not the distributor.

Re: Will changing the dizzy affect tune?
There will only be 1 red mark from factory. This is 16* ... There are 4 marks total, 3 of which are white.
18* ATDC White ... 16* ATDC Red ... 14* ATDC White ..................................... 0* / TDC White
18* ATDC White ... 16* ATDC Red ... 14* ATDC White ..................................... 0* / TDC White

Re: Will changing the dizzy affect tune?
So moving the dizzy towards the firewall is advancing and towards the front end is retarding?

Re: Will changing the dizzy affect tune?
If your car was tuned and the tuner set the timing at 16 degrees then you move the timing by 1 or 2 degrees adv or retard your entire map changes that much.
If the timing is retarded too much peak compression happens before the spark event and fuel is left unburned.

Re: Will changing the dizzy affect tune?
Normally in your ecu tuning software there will be an ignition sync screen. you set a base timing value in the ecu, let's say 16 degrees. you then use a timing light and idle the motor while adjusting the distributor timing to match the sync value in the ecu.. once they both match you hit the ignition sync button.
now the ecu knows what base timing is set at. this really only applies to distributor based setups.
