Why do you need to gap spark plugs?

Why do you need to gap spark plugs?
i understand for a boosted vehicle generally the gap is b/w .30-.34
but say you just bought some 7 series ngk's without gapping and ran it like
that, what would happen?
what is the whole idea behind gapping and why is it needed?

If you don't gap the plugs then you will mis up top ro have a rev limiter effect. You end up blowing the spark out when the gap is too wide especially at higher RPMS. On my set up even with an MSD I gap mine at .020" My buddy who had a SOHC turbo set up threw some plugs in his just out of the box, ran like **** missed and rev limiter at like 6k, I took the plugs out saw them gapped at like .045" and then regapped to .030 and his car pulled smoothly up to 7K+
