Re: Where did you mount your sensor for water temp gauges? (00SilverLS)
three possible places for placement, depending on your skill level, and willingness to depart from stock.
A) Beginner - take a piece of brass pipe, install sensor in it, splice inline to a rad. hose. Easiest by far.
B) Moderate - remove thermostat housing, drill and tap sensor there. Not difficult, but messy.
C) Advanced - remove OEM temperature sensor in head. This disables your temperature read out on the gauge cluster, but does not affect ECU readings. Install temp sensor in OEM location. Can be undone, not messy, not too difficult.
Hope that helps.

uh, can you explain the first one a little better?
do you mean the main rad. lines? like the big fat ones?
also, can you do anything with the lines that go to the TB?
thanks,
matt

yes, the big ones. It's the ghetto way of doing it, IMHO. I've never used any of the smaller lines, but I suppose you could do it that way also.
I always choose B, as it's the least intrusive (all the OEM gauges work), cleanest, and it's the same place the OEM fan temperature switch is located. I've never done choice C, just heard about it, so I can't answer that one

Would it be possible to do it a la "oil feeder style"? You know, remove the stock sender, throw a "T" fitting on there, then install the new sensor as well as the stock one? (I don't really know why you would need both, if what you're saying about it not affecting the ecu...I think it'd be funny just to see how off the stock truly is)

I thought the ECT gauge sending unit was on the head (we're talking about the gauge the instrument panel gets its temp reading from)

it is on the head... the 2 holes a little off from the middle... and an inch up from the bottom

Re: Where did you mount your sensor for water temp gauges? (Turbo Civic)
I was looking through my helms manual looking for a spot. Does it matter if its before or after the radiator? You probably want it before, right?
And the bottom hose is IN and the top is OUT, right?

Is that a B16a head? it doesn't match up with the helms diagram exactly. Maybe I'm not seeing something right, though...

I chose the 'B' option. This is a GM sensor though and it's pretty big. 3/8" NPT.

Re: Where did you mount your sensor for water temp gauges? (VaporTrail)
I'm pretty sure it does effect ECU readings. I took mine out, thinking it didn't. I was told differently, and put it back in, and I noticed my gas mileage imediately went up, and the exhaust smelled a little better. And I noticed some other minors things too.
Maybe it differs with engine.

Re: Where did you mount your sensor for water temp gauges? (superfastCRX)
i may be mistaken but i thought there were two coolant temp sensors. one for the gauge and one to tell the ecu that the engine is cold. i believe the first of the two is the sensor Vapor Trail was referring to.

Re: Where did you mount your sensor for water temp gauges? (Dee)
Isn't it better to mount it by the head or upper/heater radiator outlets since its a lot cooler by the thermostat?

I tapped my lines going to the TB. It seems to work quite well!
After my rebuilt/built-up motor goes in, I'll be tapping the OEM location and running a brass T outta there instead though...
