When is a FMIC too big???
Did a search and not much came up to answer my question.
For a daily driver, running 8psi for a long time, can a fmic be too large? This maybe a noob question, but I was thinking that if I had a fmic that was so large, it blocked air flowing directly to the radiator, that may cause a problem on hot days, or those fun stuck in traffic days. So I was thinking about getting a core which still allowed air to flow directly to the radiator. I have a stock front bumper and will keep it that way.
If I'm thinking too much into this, sorry.

No...you're not thinking too much. Once you are blocking flow to your radiator and stuff...problems occur. Most times, it can be fixed by a pusher fan, but I would'nt go any bigger than the opening that you're planning to fill with IC. I bought a bigger IC than I should have, and am not even using the top portion of it (blocked by the bumper)
So I measured and my opening is about 6" tall, but the FMIC in the fmax kit for my ride is 8" tall. It is shorter though at about 24" with endtanks and I measured 35" up to the splash gaurds. Would a the additional space width wise be good enough to get air to the radiator, or should I also get one which is shorter too?
Nah..I wouldnt sweat it...I have the big Greddy Type 24 FMIC (its almost 30 inches across and dont even know how tall, but 3 inches thick) and have had no overheating problems in my Civic.
