Default Whats the procedure for a dyno run?

When everyone has their dyno charts that show their peak HP and torque, how is the dyno run process done? i've been told so many conflicting things that im not sure how exactly its done. Can someone give a quick explanation? I'd appreciate it.......

I've been told the the engine is ran at only specific rpms steadily and each of these points will contribute to the curve....but i've also been told that the run takes place when the driver goes through 1st and 2nd or even 3rd, and then to car is floored from a low rpm in 3rd or 4th gear to obtain the HP and torque curve. which way is correct?

You get the car rolling in 1st gear, go through second, and into third. Get the revs as low as possible but still keep the drums rolling. Then hit the button on the controller for the dyno to let the computer know to start reading and mash the gas til redline.

Some people also use 4th gear for this.

basically my dyno was 2 fourth gear pulls. Drive nice and easy 1st, 2nd, 3rd, once in 4h around 4or 5k you slamm it to the ground and tell the guy to start sampling. he presses a button and you run in 4th gear till redline and its over, he releases the button. Then YOU DO NOT HIT THE BREAK!! he slows the car down with the controls on the machine/computer.

Also you can redline 1st through 4th gears to get accurate shift points and all that.

Hope this helps ...They also add a dingohopper on the spark plug wires and an probe in your muffler for the A/F readings. Here are my pics from my dyno session so everything make sense above.

usually they just go through 1st 2nd and third normally, then on mine he hits the button on the computer and punches the gas at about 3k in 4th gear. Some people use 3rd gear to get higher numbers but I believe the correct way is in 4th. On my friends FD rx-7 there was a 25 hp difference between 3rd and 4th. It went from 250 in 3rd to 225 in 4th.

I think 4th gear runs are a SAE standard, but don't quote me.

I'm not totally sure, but I think you use the gear with a ratio closest to 1:1. On most cars, it happens to be 4th.
