What turbo to choose ? Another query thread with detailed specifications...
Hey fellas,
First of all even though it seems this is a new account and a first post, i actually have an another account that i forgot the nickname+email address it is associated to. But, it is a good excuse to appriciate the goodness of this site. Shortly, Honda-Tech is like a second home to me and i'd like to thank anyone and everyone involved.
Now, for my query; i'm building a new engine now and it is my first turbo experience. The specifications so far;
- B16A2 Block with stock B16A2 head
- 89mm GSR Crank(b18 crank i believe)
- Manley rods
- Darton 84mm Sleeves
- Custom 9.0:1 CP Pistons
- Cast iron manifold
- 8LT Front mount intercooler
- 750cc Injectors
- P28+Neptune+PWM Selenoid
-...etc
Rest is irrelevant for the turbo decision i believe...
Now,... The purpose of this setup is a good, strong DAILY drive. Around 400-420hp on the crank will be enough. Since it'll be a daily driver, i want full boost to happen around 3750-4000rpm range. And a good, strong top end just for 400-420hp. Rev. limit will be around 8300rpm since we are using stock head with stock cams, springs,...etc. But it'll be upgraded afterwards, and with that upgrade along with a good turbo cam/spring/valve set, i'll probably replace the cast iron turbo manifold with a ramhorn one and with a better-bigger turbo like precision 6262,...etc.but for a long time it'll be used with the specs as i listed above.
What turbo should i go for ? 3750-4000rpm full boost, 8300rpm redline, 400-420hp on the crank ?
Thanks in advance for the inputs...
Peace...

a 60 trim with a .63 or bigger exhaust side should do the trick. If you got the money, get a ball bearing.

Thanks for the replies but can you be more specific to the brand and model since i'm really new to FI...
For example;
Precision 6262, Precision 6076, T3/T4 57trim, Garret GT2876,...etc.

Also I actually just read your first post and I am not trying to bash you sir but you can NOT use a LS crank in a B16 block unless you have custom rods.

First of all, thanks for the responses again. Silver Surfer sure seems nice.
@2000GSRTypeR; You are correct, sir. But, that's why i'm getting Manley rods. My tuner handles my purchases and i'm pretty sure he has tought that as well since he is driving a similar bottom end setup himself.
Any other recommendations about the turbo ? Maybe a cheaper model ?

If you want great response from your turbo at a reasonable price the Silver Surfer is the turbo to get sir. The Silver Surfer was designed to be a cheaper alternative to the popular GT3076R. Which alot of people claim to be the best turbo for the streets.

I recommend a Sufer to... It would be ideal for your setup. PM 'TheShodan' and ask him for info and dyno graphs on it as I'm sure he has plenty lying around. I have a Surfer myself so I can vouch for the quality of the unit. You won't be disappointed put it that way.

Ahhh typical. you want power and performance, but dont want to shell out the cash for it. 850 shipped is a steal for a custom built turbo proven for 350-550 HP.
This leaves you room to grow if you want more boost down the road. You asked for advice, 90% of the postings point to the surfer.
TravisBiggie: the 60-1 itself has a narrow efficiency zone and isnt the best choice for 4 bangers. check the map

PTE-5431 is a cheaper alternative that matches your request.

So you have a Tuner picking all your parts but he didn't recommend a turbo?
Oh and i have a precision 5957 with a fresh rebuild (has not been ran yet) and 1 year warranty from SD forced induction for $600.......... Then ill go buy a surfer!

Thanks for all your inputs. I was looking at this thread: https://honda-tech.com/forums/forced-induction-49/precision-turbo-entry-level-54mm-59mm-t3-t4-430hp-600hp-super-sale-%24599-2835667/ .
And i couldn't understand what are the differences between these 3 turbos. They all rated similar powers. What are the differences ?
Precision 59mm 60 Trim 6031 Turbo 590hp
Precision 59mm 5252 Turbo 590hp
Precision 59mm 6076 Turbo 600hp

They are all bigger than you were asking and will be laggy and not so fun as a daily.
The difference is the hot (exhaust) side. 5252 would be the better choice IMO for your engine IF you want 500hp. 5431 is a better 400hp street turbo.

None of those will see full boost by 4k on a b16. You'll get more response from a 3431 or 4431. (Same as a garrett 57 and 60 trim). The 5431 mentioned earlier would be a good option as well. Either way those 3 will be more responsive then the 3 you mentioned.

Natural Aspirations and dcmatt, you know it is b16 but with 89mm krank and 84mm pistons which results in 1973cc(if my math is correct) engine displacement. But if you guys did your recommendations after knowing this fact than thank you very much.

I do but I don't think he does.
You do know that setup is prone to have ring seal issues correct? It pushes the pin into the oil control ring and has been known to smoke due to bad oil control, even with the added supports.

It uses LS rods so it maintains the same RS ratio (?1.54?),it moves the pin farther up in the piston to compensate for the shorter deck height.

Re: What turbo to choose ? Another query thread with detailed specifications...
So, the choices are 5431, 5252, 4431 it seems. 1973cc, stock Head(only has slight port polished) B16A engine would full boost at around 3500-4000rpm BUT will it hold till the redline(8200-8300rpm) ? Again, my aim is around 400-420HP on crank @15-16psi... Like i said, even though there are some risks using LS crank and 84mm bore pistons, my aim is a fun daily driver... I hope i can achieve my aim...
