What turbo for 400 plus whp??????? B16a
I am currently building a B16a and have a t3/t4 with a .50ar and a .63 exhaust but I think it is to small for that much power. I am wondering what would be a good size t3/t4 to make this much power???? It is a street car but will see alot of track time and I am not worried about lag.

Depends on compression ratio, and your desired boost level. I'd get a larger compressor housing for it to be a garaunteed 400 whp. Like he said get it sleeved, but I'd stick to 83mm so you have some extra material if you want to change it up later you can bore it to 84mm or higher.

Ask motormatrix on this board for some info on making that much power in a B16 cause he has one with a T62-1 turbo on it and making more than 500whp.
Good luck

get the .82a/r turbine, .60a/r compressor, stage 3 wheel, 60 trim...
i would suggest that the t3/60-1 .63 a/r stg3 wheel will be able to support the amount hp you are looking to produce.

You will be rigt on the edge with a .63 A/R turbine housing T3/T04E. If you definately want 400-500 whp and are not conerned with lag, then step up to the .82 A/R T3/T04E. Here are the spec you may want to look into:
T3/T04E
.82 A/R
Stage III
.60 A/R
60 Trim
This will insure that you make 400+ whp.
T3/T04E
.82 A/R
Stage III
.60 A/R
60 Trim
This will insure that you make 400+ whp.

I'd be curiouse to see exhaust flow number (at what lift) for the b16. That's some seriouse flow for a .83 a/r on a 1.6l. What boost pressure are you guy's running with these .83 and what stage wheel. what rpm do you see full boost pressure. Im assuming these are not street motors. I'm assuming your using equal runner manifolds.

Re: What turbo for 400 plus whp??????? B16a (Speedworks801)
Thanks alot for the info. My block is sleeved and will have 9.5:1 comp pistons bored 20 over. I have a Drag Gen 3 manifold and would like to keep that if possible. Will I be able to fit a T3 60-1 on that manifold without it hitting the block? I have already shaved a little off one of the casting lines already? Thanks

You will probably need to shave another inch off or turn the turbo around. I am not sure, I have a tubular. Good luck!

You might want to talk to BoostFed, he has made 500+ whp on the b16.

Re: What turbo for 400 plus whp??????? B16a (DeepSi)
I made 430 whp on a t04/60-1 with 18 psi. Sleeved 85mm block. I would suggest an Innovative Dual Ball Bearing Turbo with a .50 a/r. That was a perfect turbo for my street setup.

Not sure if you can go up to 9000. It depends on the displacement and the turbo. My motor made power up to 8500 with an 85mm bore and my t04/60-1 turbo.

My motor is boered out 20 over and I want to use a t3 60-1 with a .63ar and a stage 3 wheel, or should I stick with a t3/t04e with a .63ar stage 3? What do you guys think?

Re: What turbo for 400 plus whp??????? B16a (LsVTeCTuRBo17)
I probably should set in a say something at this point about the 60-1 on the b16a engine. If you are going 83-84mm you are still at a 1.7L, and you wont have much of a powerband at all! I ran the 60-1 on an internally stock b16a swap this summer with a .63a/r exhaust. I didnt get full boost till 6500rpm, and then had boost for around 2000rpm worth. It was probably the worst powerband I have ever felt with a turbo car. You should seriously consider getting something smaller than the 60-1 compressor, probably a 60 trim compressor would work nicely. Learn how to read compressor maps, estimate your horsepower power goals, estimate your boost levels and then decide on the compressor map that works best for you. I keep seeing everyone answer what turbo questions with the 60-1, and for most people the turbo is too large and will never see its efficiency level that a t3/t04e would. You have to boost at least 12psi to even get the turbo efficient on the street. If i were you run the 60 trim t04e compressor with the .63a/r turbine housing and just run alot of timing with race gas. You will be able to make the power that you want with a standard t3/t40e. Remember power levels arent just dictated by the turbo its compression, ability of engine to flow air, displacement, etc.

Re: What turbo for 400 plus whp??????? B16a (boosted hybrid)
it took you that long to build boost?
ive heard of guys having full boost by no later than 5 k on a b16 with 60-1..
hmm

Re: What turbo for 400 plus whp??????? B16a (LsVTeCTuRBo17)
Somehow I dont believe any of this. I have all the essential items to make full boost as soon as possible including 3" dp, 3" exhaust, Greddy profec with the balanced turned all the way for super quick spool up, and my timing was retard to make the turbo spool up quick. I had this on two seperate b16a's, both internally stock and both responded to the turbo the same way. If you read the compressor maps of the 60-1 using the b16a you are on, or out to the left of the surge line the entire time, until boosting like 18lbs. The turbo is not properly sized for the engine. Put the turbo on a GSR and its a world of difference, although it is still quite laggy getting full boost at 5500rpm. Reading the compressor maps show that the GSR operates within in the surge line, but still does not achieve maximum efficiency, maybe around 65% if your lucky. And not a big turbo? Anything with that much lag is not a good street turbo IMO. There are plenty of other options that will support 400whp, yet still give a broader powerband. Besides you will be getting such crappy efficiency on the turbo, airflow isnt everything when deciding a turbo.
Also, what size turbine housing was your friend using to rev out to 9,000rpm? There is no way that he was using the .82a/r since you wouldnt barely spool that up with the b16a at all. If he was using the .63a/r, they typically make power up to 8,000 rpm and anything after that the housing usually dies off.

He was using a 60-1 with a .50 a/r, an ITS Dual ball-bearing turbo. And my mistake it was not 9000 rpm it was 8500.

i would suggest that the t3/60-1 .63 a/r stg3 wheel will be able to support the amount hp you are looking to produce.
