Default what should the ignition timing be set on for a FI B18b?

94 ls motor completely stock running 7 lbs. what is the best timing to set it on for reliability, gas mileage and to avoid detonation for now since i'm just breaking in my clutch without any hard driving at all? thanks in adv.

Yep 16 is fine. If you are paranoid go to 14.

16 should be good. That's what I run and out here in CA we have *** gas.

N/A you can run 18 deg BTDC just fine.

I run 14 deg BTDC on my GSR Turbo, but I have to use lame CA gas.

for NA you could bump it up to 18. for turbo on a GSR you might want to stick with Dustins idea and put it down to 14 or 15. 16 is ok for us LS guys because out compression is a tad bit lower.

Hey how much ign. adv. is it really when you turn the distributor cap all the way? We did this on my friend's GSR and it never pinged or knocked.. even in 5th gear on a steep incline. Ya, we noticed a gain.. but that's on the not-so-trusty butt-dyno. Of course we turned it back to stock when we installed the DRAG 3 .. but what exactly is the max timing adv?

I had no trouble getting it to over 30 deg BTDC at idle w/ my timing light full adjusted.

Did it idle like it was gonna die? I tried that on my ignition map and it barely idle'd

Are you sure? What kind of awesome race gas are they putting into your pumps???

If you're going at speed in 5th gear in a GS-R, chances are you can't really hear much other than road, wind, and engine noise, so you might not have been able to hear the few pings before the ECU dragged the timing back.

Yeah it ran about as well as when I had it set at 20 ATDC.

Ya, pretty sure.. we just turned it all the way.. then took it to an incline and floored it in 5th gear. Mind you, it wasn't accelerating very fast because we were in 5th gear at like 20mph at first.. but still .. we heard no such ping or knock. This same car is now boosting a DRAG 3 at 5.8psi (TiAL) making 261whp at 7200rpm.. we didn't take it to redline cuz the guy on the dyno was reading the stock tach which was way off (thanks to my friend messin it up while installing the indiglo gauges..).

The ECU will pull a good bit of timing under load if it detects any ping via the knock sensor. I assure you it was pulling timing at full advance.

Doesn't the stock ecu only pull out max of 3-4 degrees max? and disable's itself at high rpm, so i've heard.
