Default What are the limits of the D serie IM ?

Ok on my new engine I swapped a D16Y8 manifold considering it less restrictive than the D16Z6 that I had before...

My tuner have begin to tune the car and find that my car *choke* a lil bit at higher rpm...nothing anormal but he tell me that I could gain something in this zone but didnt finish to tune the car he just talk to me about that... This is at lower boost... he didnt raise the boost too high for now.

And he talked about the stock cam too...

All this cuz my friend Elspool had his car tune at the same place... and his car have a Skunk 2 IM and a ZEX cam... and the tuner found a lil difference... The only difference between my setup and Elspool's setup his my fully build head ( except the cam ) and my sleeved block...

All this is not definitive but the problem is : What could be the most important things to change ? The cam or the IM... IMO the IM could give something but nothing huge...

Im aiming to get between 300-350 whp all my engine is build Does my goal could be compromise with those two parts that I dont have.... ???

I run a SC50 .63ar

I'd suggest:

Edelbrock Performer X intake manifold
Crower turbo cam
Type-R throttle body

the car is not really *choking* but he told me that ElSpool's car was seeming to breathe easier if you know what I mean...

I was just thinking that it could be a problem if I want to get near 350 whp ??

What t/b are you and elspool running? The stocker is probably more restrictive than the y8 intake manifold imo.

Thats right.

Yellow:
How far are you revving your motor and when does it seem to choke up? and dont just say high rpm because that has been established. Looking for a number here...

He has no numbers yet, yellowturbo needs to relax, the tuning has just started, the boost is still low. Wait to see results first before getting all crazy.

I run a GSR TB on a Skunk2 IM with the ZEX cam.

The first run of those manifolds is scheduled to hit the shelves in a couple of weeks!

Yes, the type-R TB is a 62mm, and since the Edelbrock manifold has a 62mm TB opening, it makes for a perfect combo!

nice and a used type R TB is probably less expensive than a Edelbrock TB.

Edelbrock only sells a LS and a Type-R TB, both which are larger than 62mm. You can get a Type-R Edelbrock TB (65mm) and match the manifold to it, think they sell for just over $300, if you can't find a used Type-R for less than that.

Any possible way I can be next in line? Only thing keeping me from finishing my motor.

I have the same whp goal, I am going to try the stock intake manifold. I will be using a ZEX 105300 street/strip cam and valvesprings though, no head porting at all.

The B16 throttlebody will also fit on to the y8 and z6 manifolds.. You just need to port the manifold out a little bit..

IMO get a new cam
get that 59300

the cam is the brain of the motor and will allow alot more air into the engine and produce more power than just a IM

i say get more power in, and u will see gains

I say force more air in, you should make your goal no problem. All sohc seem to choke up a little after 6000rpms IMO.. Head work and and cam gear would hjelp no doubt but for your goal, I would turn up the boost first and see.

With a 300-350 whp goal, you have to ditch the stock manifold, no reason sticking with it when you can benefit from a better one!
