Default What kind of Turbo is this??

Got it from a friend, he says its trash, but he also doesn't know anything about turbo's and neither do I . Some of the fins on the intake side of the turbine are very very slightly bent (see photos below). It has very little shaft play, shaft turns freely and turbines do not make contact with walls at all.

So I want to know what kind of turbo this is, if its worth using, and how badly you guys think the fins are bent. If I left something out please let me know.

Says Garrett Airesearch on the side.

its a garrett t3 of some sort, looks like a .48 exhaust side and a .42 on the compressor side, not sure of the trim though

Looks like your standard T3 turbo to me. What are the A/R's on that thing? (I'm guessing .42 compressor, .48 turbine)

Where would I look to find the numbers?

On exhaust side it has two different markings "2.G" and "007"

Intake sid3 "83" and "M11"

It also has a serial number, can I go to a website to get exact specs?

How do the fins look? (sorry shitty digi Cam)

I had turbo like that on my teg its t3 .48/.42 ar. I ran 8psi on my b18b1 and it made pretty good power. Boost at 3k and it ran strong all the way to the redline.

Also your saying I need a T3 manifold?

I'm pretty sure it has an internal wastegate but it has a flange to bolt something on top as well.

I want to know what I'm going to need to hook it up. Its going on a B18C

Very hard to tell how the fins are...but from the pics, they look pretty decent to me.

How much shaft play would be a tolerable ammount before needing to get rebuilt? And how do I test the shaft play? Right now I can move it up and down about 1/2 to 1mm

looks like a standard T3.
I wouldn't run it on a B18C.Standard T3's typically flow 22-30lbs a minute.IMO not enough flow for a B18C.

I guess it depends on your overall goals. In my opinion, I think a T3 would make a nice street setup, without runnin high boost...especially if you're plannin on havin stock internals.

That's exafctly what I'm lookin for. I don't want to modify any of the internals, I just want 6-8 lbs of boost daily driven on pump gas, and something that spools up relatively quick.

Does anyone know a cheap place to buy a B series manifold and intercooler? People in the classifieds ask way too much for their used stuff, and I've been lookin at the SS Autochrome stuff on ebay but I've heard bad things about their manifolds cracking.

Not looking for anything bling or full race, just some regular stuff to piece together a cheap little turbo kit.

The only problem you'll see with that turbo is that it will fall on it's face in the top end.

You'll spool it REAL quick though.

Nah. This turbo is out of a Saab 2.3 liter. Don't think a 1.8 liter Honda will need more flow than that unless you are going past stock levels of boost.

You will do fine with a log manifold. Generally they are inexpensive. How are your fabrication skills?

i'd say get it rebuilt, and go hmt on that! If your just lookin for a little boost just for that extra ummph, you could probably piece the components you need for pretty cheap.

I just putz around at 6psi just to make driving that much better in my lil' hx.

ps, better hide the bag better when snapping pics

I don't know how to weld if that's what your asking. If I did then I'd make my own manifold. :note to self: take welding classes

These are one of the common turbos you see in the junkyards. Here is another on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...=WDVW

There are about 4 different kinds of internally-gated T3's. Saab T3's are not water cooled and have that heavily cast, squat turbine housing. The T3's used on German cars are water cooled. Then there's the KKK turbo, which has an odd inet, and the ones used on Fords and some other cars that have a compressor housing that have bolted flanges instead of clamped ends.
