what exactly is involved in an engine rebuild?
can someone tell me part by part what is involved in an engine rebuild? i think im about to get a 95 gsr with 90k miles, driven by my friends brother who took extremely good care of the car, never ripped it, constant routine maintenence, etc, but i plan on turboing it and wanted to know what was involved in a rebuild, and what should be done to ensure reliability for the next 5 years of me driving to college 20 miles away every day. also, how much should it cost?

new rings+hone, rod and main bearings, thrust washers, rear main seal, new oil pump, water pump, timing belt, headgasket. Probably around $600.
But at 90k miles you shouldn't need a rebuild. As long as the engine runs good, just do the timing belt, water pump and oil pump, and a basic tune up and you should be good.

i wouldn't recommend the rebuild described by willis if you're going to turbo the motor. that would be about what's required to bring a stock motor back to new stock condition, but it won't be any stronger, and it WILL cost a lot more than $600.
if you're going to spend the money, do it right with forged internals, sleeves, etc etc

Are these holes there on the stock crank? Is this from balancing the crank?

Stock sleeves. Took about 3 hours. I replaced the main seal and oil pump seal, new main bearings, new rod bearings, plastigauged everything, put the pistons ont he rods, file fit the rings, and tightened everything up. I spent the most time filing the stupid rings, that crap takes forever.

Or he could do it now and skip all the headache and inopportune down time by putting it off.
