What budget should I set???
I have a 1997 civic ex coupe with 50k miles on the original D16Y8, and I want to boost 5 psi (for the time being) with the greddy kit w/o FMIC (for the time being)....
What kind of budget should I set??
I got a quote for the turbo kit + installation for $2k. What else will I need, or what should I be prepared to purchase soon after the turbo.
I am thinking clutch, and boost & A/F guages, but what else will I need???
Thanks!!!!!!

buy it yourself and install it yourself! use the $600 or so you would have spent on installation to upgrade various parts, like get an intercooler, boost and egt gauges, etc.
Build it yourself, and install it yourself. I am glad I did, and you will know all of the components of your turbo instead of having to drag it down to the shop every time you bust an oil line or something goes wrong. You will save yourself a lot of money in the end.
I spent a total of $1200 for my kit (Used). Greddy TD04H kit w/ FMIC, piping, HKS BOV, black box, FMU, and a few other things.
I have about $1500 total in the kit right now (Guages, valves, oil lines, maintenance); and still have SAFC (Custom circuit for $$$ reasons), and DSM injectors and I'll be set.
If you do it yourself, you will be able to get everything you want, and more. Just read up on it and the installation should be pretty easy.

on the d series motor you can boost under 12psi... you just need the right fuel and timing... that should bring you well over the power of a b18c.
get a kit w/ a t3 in it.. forget the greddy t25 or that mitsu turbo (whatever it is)
make your own kit.
for get the fpr,fmu and afc cramp... skip it and go standalone.
you save about 400 skipping these parts and standalones(many choices) cost about 8ish (so think of it costing you 4ish)
keep the d series motor... if you blow it up it will be cheap to replace or the parts you have can go on a b16 ,b18, or b20 or.....
as for a budget...
never set that number in stone, unless you like calling yourself a liar
1000-1500 for a do it yourself kit
look for a greddy kit and upgrade the turbo and see what that runs you
see if the vendor can strip parts to save you money too (might save a couple hundred)

in my opinion, don't set a budget. You'll most likely go over it, or you spend all your time trying to find parts for the exact price you want and that could take awhile and then you've never built your car. I'm just saying this from experience, i went in with intentions of having a budget and i ended up spending almost twice as much to get everything right.
It never ends, you'll set numerous budgets and keep telling yourself, "this is it" then something comes around like a sweet Group Buy and you have to have it. Then, you'll find yourself breaking your "budget" you'll eventually get to the point where you have put so much time and money into your car, you can't half *** anything now and you start buying things like FJO's, lighter wheels and stainless lines for everything.
Now, there is no turning back and then you'll be spending so much money and making so many little trips just to get a particular screw or hose and then it will still be not quite right and you'll want to do things you never thought you would do like strip out your interior and remove your A/C and power steering while you wait for motor work.
It's all worth it!
So, don't set a budget, just have fun.

I think you guys got the wrong idea, maybe I asked the question poorly, but what i am wondering is....
If i spend $2k on my turbo kit, what else will i need right away, just to get a reliable car, so i can save money to get all the cool **** you guys are talking about. I am not concearned about making the most power right away, I want to do it right, but I still want boost as soon as i can.
So I was thinking, what will I need right away (guages, clutch etc.)
Then what should I get later (standalone, 3" Exhaust etc.)
And what would be the costs associated with these parts?
Sorry if my question was too vague.

i started out with the intentions of making a junkyard setup. after 2 months, $1200, chrome intercooler piping, an hks super sequential blow off valve, max rev manifold, max rev oil feed flange, and the t3 turbo itself, i have gone $400 over my intended budget. i'm not even half way done. i thought to myself, if i'm gona do it, i might as well do it right. dont set a budget, but make sure you get good deals on everything.
