Default Weird problem while tuning hondata s200b

okay it was a good day yesterday tuning the hondata with a wideband o2.. We got all the partial throttle maps throttle smoothed out and completed the WOT runs on stock boost on the TIAL 35mmHP wastegate..

now here's the problem. I have a evc iv EBC and it was setup correctly with it setup at 1 bar at high setting. I wanted to tune at 1 bar but the car wouldn't boost past the wastegate setting... in fact, it goes to .4 bars and drops down to .3 bars like the wastegate is losing boost.

(note)First the wastegate is installed correctly without those crappy gaskets they provide and the HP model tial wastegate doesn't need a ring on the bottom of the wastegate.

after we were not successful with the EVC iv, we tried out a manual boost controller and adjusted it almost all the way up but it STILL would not boost past .4 bars and would continue to drop to .3 bars at higer RPMs..

ok so the manual boost controller doesn't have any affects on it, so we took ALL the vacuum lines from the wastegate and tried boosting and STILL the wastegate would open WITHOUT the vacuum lines at .4 bars and STILL drop down to .3 bars..

so what is the PROBLEM???????

after my tuner put my car back together the way it was with the new maps of the stock boost setting, I continued to drive home. I decided to play around with the EVC IV once again and set it at 1 bar.. and it started to boost past .4 bars!!!!! WHAT THE HELL?? why is my car boosting past .4 bars now??? and not dropping at all???

(NOTE) tested out my charge pipes and intake manifold for leaks.. NONE, wastegate install properly.

here's a pic of my setup... but this pic doesn't have the evc installed and other parts..

Sound identical to a problem I had with my internal wastegate. It was all the springs fault. The exhaust pressure is simply more powerful than the spring in the wastegate and it pushes it open.

Try a stiffer spring. That's how I solved my problem. Oh, even the way the boost drops is symptomatic of a weak spring condition.

well the high pressure version doesn't require a ring.. the bottom is already sealed up.

Nice heat shield around the turbo, did that make a big difference? Right now my engine bay is roughly 501,293,294.49 degrees after driving.

yah it made a difference... before, i couldn't even touch the top of my hood.. and now it's not as hot.. i'm not sure how hot my car runs but my temp needle only goes up 1/4 of the way up in all driving conditions.

so does anybody else have any thoughts on my dilemma?

How do you have the wastegate hooked up?

the wastegate is hooked up to the hks instructions. double and triple checked it at the shop so i'm 100% it's hooked up correctly.

yup 100% sure.. absolutely no gap on the bottom of the wastegate for exhaust gases to pass through. I know for a fact that regular 35mm one has a ring.

nope no nos t jet

how do you check for exhaust leaks? i couldn't hear or feel anything over the manifold and turbo..
keep in mind.. I am boosting more now right after i drove back home from the shop. and only at the shop i was having problems boosting over .3/.4 bars and right now it's at .6

Does hondata have a boost cut of some sort?? he used his ecu for tuning. then later on burned the chip on mine after the tuning was done..

Wow, I was just thinking about this. Yes, hondata has a boost cut feature. In the ROM Editor it is under the "Rev Limits" Tab. Here is a pic.

It is in the bottom of the picture.b\

Yes, the 35mmhp has a ring, mines has one and so should yours, the newer 38mm, i don't know, but the 35mmhp ones definately have a ring and i'm pretty sure that's your problem. As for the hondata boost cut, if you hit the boost cut, it'll feel like you car just hit a brick wall, trust me i know. Paul

ok i just took off the wastegate and yes i saw the ring haha because the other day i took off the wastegate in the dark to remove the blown gasket.. sorry for the mis-information..

btw i called my tuner and he said the boost cut was set at 16psi.. so.. i guess the hondata boost cut is ruled out...
