Default Wastegate Theory

Ok.. perhaps I'm overthinking this or just going about this wrong, but any people who can add to this please do.

Ok.. so I see alot of people on here once they do the built motor and more boost setup, they go to a larger wastegate (40mm+). I don't understand the need for a larger wastegate I guess. If the wastegate is designed to let out excess exhaust pressure and regulate boost levels, when you are at a higher boost level, then there should be less exhaust needing to be let out by the wastegate. So if this is true, why run a bigger wastegate when there is actually less stuff being flowed through the opening at full boost and therefore no need for the bigger opening?

From what I understand the larger wastegate helps control the boost better and has better flow. Also when upgrading to a larger wastegate it is usually a much better quality.

that about sums it up, just able to relieve exhaust faster
