Default VSS help

I know this isn't directly related to forced induction but it is on my turbo car so here goes.

I just received a VSS from a member here on HT. I plug it in turn the car on and spin the spindel. Speedometer moves. So I know I have a good connection and a good sensor. I remove the old one do the same thing as above and verify that the sensor is bad. I then install the new sensor, this is all on a 00 b16 si tranny in my 00 si btw, once installed I go for a drive and no speed reading. So I pull the sensor out and look at the spindle. This spindle is a shorter one than the other which used to work. So I swap spindles and do my little spin by hand test and yes it works. So I reinstall the sensor with the swapped over spindle still no reading. Ok what gives? What's the next thing to do? I'm guessing I'll have to pull the tranny and dig into it. Anyone know? Thanks in advance.

well, if one vss works then why mess with it? the new vss that you got was probably from a d-series. i remember when my vss went out on my b18c1 i swapped it over from a d15b7 and it went right in. only difference was liek you said, the spindle and the gear was shorter.

The problem is it doesn't work. I know the sensor is good because of the spin by hand test. When it's installed it doesn't work at all. I thought it was the difference in spindle but that wasn't it. I'm wondering what else could be wrong. Thanks for the reply though.

your vss can still not work even if it spins freely. i was pulling off my radiator hose and some coolant spilled down into the plug, and thats how my vss went bad.

I know it's good though. I know the sensor is good because if I take it out of the tranny it spins and the speedometer registers a speed reading. It's just when it's installed it doesn't. The problem has got to be something in my tranny and I'm wondering what that could be. Thanks for your replies though.

Pull the speed sensor out of the tranny and look in the hole with a flash light. You should be able to see just the edge of the drive gear on the diff. Its a hard nylon ring. If you can't see it have some one spin one of the tires and stick you finger in the whole and see if you can feel it. You may have broken part of this ring off. That would explain why your speedo reads out of the car but not in the tranny.

I'll do that. Thanks. I'm guessing if it's bad, which most likely it is, I'll have to pull the tranny in order to fix it right? Oh I have a quaife I don't know if that makes a difference. Sorry but I'm not the most schooled individual on tranny's.
