what is a v band? what does it do?

Yes that is a v-band set. To help the post above me: A "v-band" is just the name given to the type of clamp used to secure to pipes or something together. It's ALOT faster and easier to work with instead of fastening things with 4 or 5 bolts.

The inside of the clamp is in the shape of a V.

Don't some wastegates have a V-band outlet?

From looking at the pic in the above link, I can't understand why that would be faster than a regular T-clamp, since the V-band has 3 pieces.... :shrugs:

Tial 44mm do (just one of many).

You're a little confused. Those 2 flanges get welded to whatever you want to connect. For example one flange will be welded to the exhaust side of a turbo and the other flange to the downpipe. Than the clamp will just connect them instead of having 4 or 5 bolts.
