Twin Disc Clutches
I have been asking and get get a consistent or straight answer, so I though i'd post in here so I can finally make a decision. I am running a B16 with a CABLE Y1 LSD trans and do not want to make a switch to Hydro. Will twin disc setups fit both cable and Hydro trans? I have checked the websites of the clutch manufactuers and all they will list is....for B series trans ect. If anyone knows FOR SURE please let me know.

Re: Twin Disc Clutches
Why go to THAT extreme?
Theres regular strip clutches that are much cheaper and will work great.
some of our HT sponsors has awesome deals if you look around.. maybe they might have your answer.
I dont know the answer cuz everything i know pertains to hydro..

Re: Twin Disc Clutches
A clutch made for a hydro bseries will not work on your y1 transmission. OS Giken makes one for the small spline bseries cable transmissions... Or if its easier for you to get a hydro bseries twin disc clutch.. Get a YS1 cable tranny and the hydro clutch will work on there.

Re: Twin Disc Clutches
If you check out my build thread you'll understand. The set up is not going to get driven on the street aside from maybe a show off weekend here and there. Trailered to and from the track and I had original goals of somewhere around 500hp but now with how overboard i've been going on internals and the turbo i've chose I know that i'm going to be pushing closer to the 600 mark. Not to mention since I would like to stay cable the twin discs still give a much lighter pedal feel than the stage XXXX regualr clutches. Just wasn't sure exactly what the difference of why the twins won't fit cable trans. Is it simply because of the different spline count.

Re: Twin Disc Clutches
the imput shafts are different sizes, I went from a J1 tranny to a ys1 cable gsr tranny and I had to get a different clutch disc. you can get a twin disc to fit a cable tranny. I used to have a setup for it and I think exedy made it.

Re: Twin Disc Clutches
Thats the only thing, everytime I search for companies with twin discs they simply say "for B series" they don't state cable or Hydro. I think i'm just going to have to break down and start calling manufactures.

Re: Twin Disc Clutches
spline counts are different only in 90-91 b-series tranny. 92+ have same spline count, im using 2ms action clutch on my cable tranny. The only difference is the release bearing.

Re: Twin Disc Clutches
Here's the deal those older smaller spline cable transmissions are weak period if your trying to put that much power that you need a twin disc clutch I can put money on that tranny grenading quickly. Just put in a stage 4-5 single disc or upgrade to a ys1

Re: Twin Disc Clutches
And what exactly would make this trans weaker? Aside from a lower spline count input shaft?

The inputshaft is smaller and the diffs are crap from my experience. Thy also have A different design internally than the ys1 and hydros. Just not well made IMO

Re: Twin Disc Clutches
I'm looking for something other than a "different design" though. I really doubt Honda completely went back to the drawing board on how to mesh 2 sets of gear together. Do they make them out of different materials? Are they running softer metal input and countershafts? Please give me good reason and justification if you're going to put a bash on a specific setup other than it's just junk

Re: Twin Disc Clutches
Personal experience with branding those diffs on stock ls engines. Need I say more. Now put hundreds of hp through one
case in point if your gong to drop over a grand for a clutch then get a better trans first. Cable ys1 are cheap and then more gearsets will work as well. Ou don't have to agree with my jut giving my real world experience

Re: Twin Disc Clutches
HP shouldnt be the issue with putting excess stress on a trans, torque would be the big factor adding stress. And whats your experience with this exact trans? What malfunctioned? What was the car doing when it "grenaded"?

Re: Twin Disc Clutches
Horsepower is just a calculation of torque and rpm
Cases cracking and diffs breaking some exploding. Just doing burn outs. Some sidestepping the clutch and some slipping the clutch.
The smaller spline input shaft makes whatever clutch tou buy incomparable with the larger splines so IMO getting a ys1 and then a clutch is best option be ause gives tou more room for the future and you will eventually change things

Hydro will fit into ys1 cables only. He is running the older style trans which is different design only two shift forks and totally different bearings and shafts and cases

s1 cable j1 cable y1 cable use the smaller spline
y80 hydro s80 hydro ys1 cable use the big spline, all hydro boxes use and the ys1.

Re: Twin Disc Clutches
Ok, so what i've established is that I won't be running a twin disc haha. I was hoping it was possible to just swap out the input shafts but it doesnt sound like thats the case. So i'll just start doing some extra squats at the gym.

Re: Twin Disc Clutches
you ask for help and then everyone who tries to help you you grenade on them... wtf bro... is your b16 tranny built is that why you dont wanna let it go or are you attached to it?... idk what chassis you have but its just overall easier to get the gsr especially if its stronger and works better (i didnt even know that) or find out which cable one you have and then go from there dont just shoot everyones attempt at helping YOU down.. in any case i HATE CABLE trannys ive broken a ton of em i would just go hydro considering all honda parts arent getting any younger so why would you want a 20 year old tranny when you could theoretically use a 10 year old one... especially to be shocking it with boost on top of clutch drops at the track

Re: Twin Disc Clutches
I have the same cable box in mine and I spoke with SPEC (David), they can and will make you a twin.
See my mail exchanges which you can use as a ref.
I have a UK spec mark 2 CRX
with a B18 fitted
with a Y1 cable transmission.
this is the 21 tooth spline at 25.4mm diameter as a apposed to the
Hydraulic 25.7
I have been running ACT kits Information from ACT web site
Honda
Acura Integra 1990-1991
ACURA INTEGRA LS L4 1.8L N FI (B18A1)
Cable Transmission
AI2-XTG6 Clutch Kit
Spring Centered (6 Pad) (Part number 6220112)
Release Bearing Acura Integra (Part number RB837)
Pilot Bearing Acura/Honda/Maz (Part number PB1002)
My car is used on the road and does lots of track work, both drag and circuit. It’s a B18 turbo making about 450bhp at the flywheel (UK dyno) The ACT friction material is eating the flywheel and cover, plus its so dam heavy on a cable box. I want a clutch that will take the abuse and hold but will work on the street I traffic. I was close to buying a twin special order only but the price was silly. I have been told by all the usual clutch specialist the normal things that makes their application superior etc etc and they all go the same way, dead flywheels and cover plates and no real use from the clutch. What can you do for me? I like to look of your mini twin but I guess its not going to work in my cable box, would be over kill for my power but I would trade that for a reliable steetable clutch that will last.
SPEC's Reply
Eddie,
It has been our experience that our twin (and all our singles, even super clamp stage 5) drives easier than the ACT. And they are all also easier on the surfaces due to the carbon in our friction material. We can really lower the pedal requirement for the cable setup. When you drag race, what tires do you use ? I can get you in a nicer setup without breaking your bank..
