turbo smoking? normal?
sup guys,
just about 500 miles ago i had my b18b rebuilt, and just got my turbo about 1-1.5K miles. recently the car,or the turbo (im guessing the turbo, since compression is fine) will slightly to moderatly smoke at idle, but only when i first start it like in the morning,or when the car has been sitting for a period of time, not a couple hours. but after a drive,or atleast putting normal driving boost on it,it will stop.im wondering if this is normal,or should i be concerned about it?

from what i can see its white. but ill take a closer look next time it happends. and to change something about my original post,it doesnt just happen in the mornings,or when the car has been sitting a period of time. this morning i got to work at 930,and went to lunch at 12-12:15,and when the car was started it started to smoke at idle.

What size feed line to turbo?
What does your drain line look like?
Have you checked the turbo to see if there is excessive play.
Have you checked to see if there is oil/oily residue in your charge pipe?s

If there is no residue in the ic pipes, and no play in the turbo.
You could check your compression in all four cylinders

Re: turbo smoking? normal? (littleblue)
no shaft play, oil feed and drain are fine, feed is a re-enforced rubber hose,so its not to small of a line, and drain is pretty much straight,no kinks or dips. as far as i know intercooler pipes have no oil,or oil residue. and compression is fine, remember,i just rebuilt the motor not but 500 miles ago.
ive heard that slight/moderate smoking could be caused by the pcv system. my pcv valve is hooked up,but i do have a breather filter on the valve cover. but evenso,it never smoked without the turbo,so does that rule out pcv?
and also,i have a garrett turbo. ive heard that garrett turbos use a "piston ring" type seal on the exhaust end of the shaft. this "piston ring" seal works with your oil pressure. as oil pressure hits the ring,it "pushes" to outward, creating a better seal. so at idle,or low shaft speed, the ring could "leak" oil due to not having that pressure to ensure the seal. sound true?

That is a very good question and I to would like to know the answer. I have the same problem at idle with a built bottom end and 205 across the board. small feed big return, smoke drives me crazy at idle when it has to idle more than 2 or 3 minutes. Just can't stand it.

Re: (Jay_Sensing)
it could also need to be warmed up to give the ring/exhaust housing a chance to shrink slightly and make a tight /tighter seal.

ok then your turbo needs rebuilt since you said your engine was rebuilt 500 miles ago...
you did properly break in the engine right? it needs more than 500 miles of break in and since you said you were hittin boost all the time i dont think you broke it in properly in the correct procedure..

Re: (mike93eh)
read the posts again, compression is fine. and i doubt i didnt break it in,seeing that i havent even gotten on it yet,and dont plan on it till i tune it. and if you read,i said normal driving boost. as in the 3-5 pounds seen normally under normal driving conditions.

compression can be fine but that doesnt mean the oil rings seated properly or were properly installed for that matter.

Re: (mike93eh)
true, your right. but i doubt its the rings,or the motor for that matter because it goes away after a drive, and doesnt come back till the car sits for a period of time turned off. (but knock on wood to be safe).
