how to tell if a turbo is any good??
i and a friend did our first turbo set up last summer. the turbo kit was new it took us a week but we got it done. the turbo was letting out some black smoke. we went to a tunner shop to get the computer tunned. and the guy ends up telling us that the turbo is burnt beacuse it smoking.BUt i also have a friend that works there and he has an eg gsr turbo and his was smoking hella bad. so ??????wtf????? the owner is kinda in the 5 finger side . and guess what he told us!! that you just can throw away a turbo just like that, that to give it to him and he can throw it away for us lololol o man this guy.... the turbo has less then 30 miles we took it off and got a new. and its still smoking, and its pushing 14psi.
we still got the other turbo an i was wounder how to tell if it bad??

I think that the reason you're not getting appropriate responses is because it is very difficult to read that first post. I'm sorry, but its even taken me 3-4 times to try and understand what you're really trying to ask. Most people at this point will move on and not respond. Getting this uptight, will get you nothing.
(What I'm really trying to say is, if you have a shorter version of what happened, have a list of the parts used for the setup, and state a more direct question, you might get better responses)
Try again, and good luck.

In short there was black smoke coming out of his turbo and a local tuner told him his turbo is bad and he wants to know how to tell if the turbo is actually bad.
If you put a new turbo on and its still smoking theres probably a leak in your Manifold somewhere.

"Black smoke".
TONS of questions come up here, which is why he needs to be clear as to how it came to start to "smoke" in the first place.
-Rich condition?
-Oil in the smoke?
-What components used?
-Was the turbo new or used?
-Were there any restrictors used? What was the oil pressure?
too many variables involved to listen to just one testimony from a mechanic.
The person doesn't seem to be interested in a response anyway, so let's just let him be.
Good luck to him and what he does to solve his issue.

Make sure ur oil return line isnt cramp. sometimes when there is a cramp in the return line the oil cant return to the oil pan fast enough an it will began to fill up in the turbo thus blower oil out in the exhaust making (black smoke). This isnt a good thing, u can kill the seals in the turbo.. try to keep ur return line straight as possible without any bends..

Doesn't sound like you know really what you're talking about. You can make well over 350hp with a rod and piston setup. What are you tuned on? Is it or has it been dyno'd? So you bought the motor with JE pistons, rods, blockguard, and some goodies in the head?

wit turbo kits, sometimes the return line comes flipped upside down whi9ch causes oil to back up and make the turbo smoke

Last chance. Instead of worrying about your "pride" and "honor" by returning insults, you may want to address what we stated first. This is supposed to be a tech forum, not a pissing contest. If you want help, slow down, be mature, and check out your issues.. Otherwise, this goes nowhere, and someone will have it locked. k?

I don't get it... Now your asking how much HP your setup will make? Stick with your first question.
Blowing smoke can me lot's of things. If your friends is also blowing smoke, that doesn't rule out that it's normal. He is also having issues aswell then.
With only 30 miles on it, start with the basics. How much oil pressure at the oil feed? Restricted or no? Too much pressure or no? Correct drain setup and angle? Inspect turbo oil seals? Too much blow-by? Are you running any kind of a proper breather setup?
These are just basic things to check and answer. Go check it out and report back.
