Default Turbo setup without an intercooler?

No flaming. this will only be temporary until I can get more money to intercool it all but i want to start off with a turbo setup on very low boost, like 6 to 8 psi on a B18B and I just want to bolt up a turbo to a down pipe, then feed the turbo up to my intake manifold with a blow off valve inline. Very basic description but you should be able to figure out what i want to do anyway. .lol. If this is an ok setup to do on low boost then about 6 months or so down the road finish it all and maybe boost around 10 - 12 psi then let me know.

I just wondered what the side effects are if any because everywhere i have read in the past 30 minutes has said it is completely fine under very low boost like i am talking. Just looking for some sort of an explanation behind either theory. Thanks

Well it will work, and it might even be fine. BUT the possibility for detonation are increased due to the fact that the compressed(hot) air is not being cooled down. So its up to you to take the chance blowing your motor, or spending a few more hundred on an intercooler set up. Even a cheap eBay one would work.

No one can tell you what to do, just what to expect.

theres no reason not to run an intercooler, the benefits outweigh the small price 1000x.

yeah you can do it, you'll be fine, my friend did this, 5-6 psi from a greddy kit on his d16 with no intercooler for about 6 months, street driven, hell he took it to willow springs like that, it wasent fast but it held together. he has an IC now though.

An ebay intercooler will work just fine. I have one and have researched them and found countless other users running them with no issues. Especially since it sounds like he is on a budget, it's his best bet and better than not running one at all.

Like I said in my earlier post, I have a spare Drag intercooler that I will sell you cheap if you are interested. I have no use for it. Good luck either way.

Ha. There is no way running your motor without an intercooler will "fry" your motor. The point of an intercooler is to cool the heated charge coming from the turbo into the intake manifold. A cooler charge with result in more HP, that's a given, not prevent your motor from frying. Intercoolers increase the efficiency of the entire system, without one you'll be less efficient, but you can still do it. Like referenced earlier, the old Greddy kits had an optional intercooler. And how many countless cars are factory turbo'd, running low boost levels, without an intercooler? My mom's Sabb doesn't have an intercooler and has about 160,000 on it and still going strong. Intercoolers help, but are not necessary for what you're looking to do.

My F350 runs 8 psi and doesn't have an intercooler, and it isn't a smaller turbo found in a saab or whatever. If you are just going to run 5 psi you really shouldn't be worried.. I agree with Specail Ed

Haha^

I ran my d16z6 without an intercooler for a while. 7psi from a nissan t25. It was fine. It didnt knock and I beat the hell out of it for a few months until I put an Intercooler on it.

There are tons of factory turbo cars that don't have intercoolers btw.

my brother-in-law ran his turbo'd ka24de without an intercooler for close to a year with no problems.

i am currently running my b16 turbo without an intercooler until i have enough cash to make a "backdoor" so i can use it. it's running fine and strong with no problems.

haha...this thread is funny.

OP you'll be fine. Although if your getting your car tuned without the IC when you go back to install one later it will change the flow of the system and require you to re-tune.

If your plannig on running an FMU then runing without an intercooler is the least of your worries.
