Well I got the car ruunning for those of you following the build and I been tuning it the last couple days. It runs great and haven't hit any major snags motor wise.

Well I finally started getting into the boost coloumns tonight and after a pull at 5 psi I started to hear a schreeching noise.
Long story short turned out to be the compessor wheel on the turbo touching the housing. I tugged on the wheel and felt lots of play..

What really baffles me is I checked the turbo after every run and the wheel was always snug. It just went out on the last pull I did. There's no kinks in the line I have a restrictor and I'm making 80psi at most. What I been thinking of is not letting the motor idle for 2 min before shutting it down. I thinks that's what killed it.




Well for my question
Its a garret t4 to4b turbo not the best for spool but the lag isn't horrible.
Should I try and do a rebuild on the turbo?
Should I buy a rebuild kit from ebay or from a dealer?
Should I mark the comressor wheel before disassembly or would I need to get it balanced regardless?
I'm saving for a brand new turbo but that's in the future if a rebuild will cost me less than a hundred ill go for it.

It sounds to me that foreign debrits/particles have gone through the turbo. You need to disassemble it to find out for sure.

I'd start marking everything off and taking it apart to see what's gone on...iI'd also recommend you stay away from eBay rebuild parts unless it's a reputable company what selling them.

P.s. look into a inline oil filter with a large internal surface area for the turbo.

Do you think that something could have been ingested and bent the fins??

I have a steel braided feed line I could only put an oil filter on either ends. I might not have room.

And that's the thing on the rebuil kits I'm not quite sure of where to pick one up from?

The motor is running strong though and sounds like music to my ears lol.

I think something has gone through the oil into the turbo and damaged the bearings. This would result in excessive shaft play.

Rebuild kit wise, try and get your hands on a genuine Garrett kit as you're assured the quality.

This is the filter I run. I'd imagine you'd be able to pick them up over there in the USA. http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/perfor...rbo-oil-filter As you can see there not cheap, but it's a good filter with a large internal surface area.

That filter looks like it will fot at the sandwich plate.
I'm going to take the drain line off and check the flow today maybe something clogged the line idk.
Still on the hunt for a good rebuild kit though.

Unless you know what you are doing don't even bother trying to rebuild it yourself have someone do it for you... Unless everything is installed in exactly the same alignment as it was originally it won't be in balance and will grenade.. I've seen wheels go through housings and hoods like this

Do you know of any places out here in cali that could do the job?
I mean I've taken turbos apart never put back together with new parts though.

Most if not any diesel shop should rebuild or have someone that does it.
Most rebuilds average 250

SAlright there's a few diesel shops around my area I'm going to check them out tommorow.

Well I took the drain line off from the oil pan. And there's a small steady stream coming out but I don't know if its enough. Any way I could tell how much is supposed to be draining from the drain line?
Has any one took there's off and checked the flow out from the turbo?

Are you checking at idle? Obviously the flow will be very different at 10psi versus 80psi...

At idle I'm making around 25psi.
Well I took the turbo off and heard some noise in the chra. I took it apart and found the snap ring and turbine side bushing came loose. Most likely why I got such little oil draining.
The compressor wheel had a little damage and the housing.
The bushings didn't have any crazy excesive wear so I reinstalled the bushings in place
I marked the compressor nut so I reinstalled at the same spot I just got done reinstalling everything and I'm going for a test drive.

We'll see how this thing holds up

Just got back in and the turbo is building 5 psi by 4000rpm and isn't scraping the housing any more.
We'll see how long it last's... At least I got my car running again.
