Icon2 Turbo Performance Tips & Tricks B18B1 1.8, Help?

I have a B18B1 1.8 in my Civic, Stage 1 Garrett Turbo w/10-15lbs boost & intercooler, Precision fuel injectors, Crower cams, Skunk2 new springs and lite weight retainers, Thermal exhaust, UD pulleys. Guestiment-330HP.

I'm kinda new to this engine & I'm just looking for some more upgrades & tips/tricks that actually work, without wasting my time & money.

  • Throttle body (size, brand, if any)
  • TB Spacer (brand if any)
  • Ignition (plugs, wires, cap, coil, exc.)
  • Intake Manifold
  • High-Flow Cat or Straight Pipe

Any advice will do.

Thanks in advance.

What type of power are you looking for?

Keep the ignition stock. You can make upwards 600whp with a stock Honda ignition setup.

A TB would be nice but you can make good power with stock. The same goes with IM.

I wouldn't go THAT far. Not for any extended time anyway

I'm sure the stock ignition is good, but how far can you go before you Go with MSD on a boosted car?

What part, the ignition or TB/IM? The stock Honda ignition setup is very effective. All that is needed is a good set of NGK plugs and wires. I've seen Honda's that make well over 600whp without even a blaster coil. I should say, for the money, spend it else where first before the ignition.

get ngk bkr7e plugs and gap them to .028-.032"

as for your exhaust, the free'r flowing the better, I always run open down pipe on my turbo cars, but thats just my preference.

The internal ignition system can take a few runs for 600whp, sure. But for extended periods of time, the ICM gets horribly hot, inefficient, and will cause some misfire at that level. People tend to simply "replace" their distributor all together thinking that will solve the problem for sure. In actuality its a band-aid to where real ignition needs to be added so that you're no constantly replacing/regapping plugs, and tackling misfire issues. A good ignition system is NEVER a bad idea be it MSD, Mallory or even an M&W10. When you make big horsepower, in order to be consistent, you need good spark to do it, bottom line.

I've been doing this long enough to know that no matter how good a "tune" is, with better ignition and spark, the tune, drivability and feel will last much longer for years to come.

450whp is a nice start to look at a simple ignition system, but it depends upon your driving style and what you use the car for. The more endurance running you do (constant load and a constant pace) the more an ignition system is needed.

thanks for the read up, I'll prolly end up going with a MSD box in the future.

MSD makes a external coil conversion kit right? (Cap & Button)

& what about the Throttle body size? how big is the stocker & how big should/can I go?
