Default Turbo does not spin at idle...

I got a GT3561S off someone here on HT for a buddy of mine. I received it and everything looked good...no shaft play at all and it spun freely by hand. My buddy just got finished with his setup and took it to the dyno last night. There we noticed that it was not spinning at idle, it would spin when we blipped the throttle but then it would come to an abrubt stop. I then tried spinning it by hand and it felt very stiff and would not spin freely anymore. The turbo is on a 82mm fully built lsvtec. We made sure it is getting oil and the return was good, everything checked out fine. The turbo builds boost and seems fine other than this. What happened?

I forgot to add that my buddy did not use an oil restrictor...he was told not to.

2 things you may want to look at. make sure the housings are bolted on correctly and if the oil pressure is to high at idle it can lock the bearing system down. If it is a ball bearing unit it needs the restrictor.

I did not use it before him.

My buddy installed the turbo and clocked it so maybe the housings were not bolted down right. I'll unbolt it and redo it myself. I am not sure what the oil pressure is at idle though, he does not have a gauge in the car. The turbo is not a ball bearing but mine is not either and its been working great for 2 years with a restrictor.

When you say tough to turn, can you give us something to reference it to? My turbo rarely spins at idle...

Exactly. Some of these just don't run at idle all the time. Is there any physical wheel to housing contact? If not, then i really wouldn't worry about it. The same thing occurs on many larger turbo/smaller displacement setups.

if its ball bearing and doesnt spin at idle i woudl be worried. most bb turbos i have seen spin for ~ 2 mins after the car is shut off.

What I mean is that it is not completely seized so it turns by hand but if I were to spin it like a top it would only turn about 1/8 of a turn when it would spin for a couple seconds before. The car made 400 on 15psi which is OK i guess. My buddy is not happy with that number because I made more with a 60trim at that psi. LOL

It should spin easily if you spin it by hand, and even easier if the engine is running. Journal bearing turbos will spin for a short while also, even with the engine off. It it is hard to turn and comes to a stop abruptly, there may be some issue with the oil passages, housings, or the wheels. I'd blow out the passages, re-install the housings, and in general make sure the wheels/shaft are fine.

If it was used, then there migh be an issue. The bearings are not sealed inside, and any crap that passes though that oil can get lodged in them. Metal shavings + ball bearing races = bearing death.
