Default Turbo d16z6 questions

alright d-series boost heads i got a question for you guys, a Garrett AiResearch T3, watercooled ball bearings, maximum boost pressure 0.75 bar (11 psi), off a saab 9000 should spool pretty quickly and some good numbers on a tuned d16z6 correct? i have a chance to get one at a local junkyard for 100 bucks... its in beautiful condition with NO shaft play... should i jump on the deal and prepare myself to become a dseries turbo ninja? or leave it alone...

Just because there is no shaft play doesnt mean that the seals are good. I had a friend pick up a DSM t25 from a junkyard, zero shaft play. When we started the car it blew smoke like crazy. Guess you just have to get lucky.

WHen you buy a junkyard turbo you take a risk of it being blown.

and if it is blown it will cost some money to get rebuilt. so save your money and buy a real turbo.

who cares what the A/Rs are, you can just bolt on the bigger ones from other t3s. The compressor wheel is the main thing you need to look for. there are some really small ones that would not be as good as the 50 and 60 trim ones. All the turbine wheels are standard (stg 1) size so all you can do is put the .63 housing on.

I run one from a saab 9000. it has a 50trim compressor wheel. I put a .63 a/r turbine housing from a volvo non ic 240 on it. Pulls all the way to 7300 on my Z6. feels nice at 10 psi and i like the smell of coke...err ya good luck

oh ya, NO shaft play is bad. even new turbos have a little, (whisper) that's where the oil goes. you don't want any end play however. also 11 psi is not all that turbo can make. I wouldn't run it past 16-18 though because it might not be as efficient
