Re: Turbo cooling.... (andysila)
oil or if it has coolant attachments then OIL and COOLENT, there are also oil coolers that are available if you are looking to cool a turbo setup but I would only recommend getting a oil cooler if you have a ball bearing turbo..
If your EGTS are high durring the cooldown period i would wait for it go down and then turn the car off becuase the high EGTS could seize your shaft or the bearings...

Does the oil really "cool" the turbo? I thought it was just for lubrication?

Alright.. so now i know that its cooled by oil, water, and maybe coolant... now, which one is the most efficient?.. im thinking water but you guys probably know a lot more than me ..

This is where you are going to find an argument develop. Of course water will cool a turbo better, but many think it is unessessary.
However, I use the water-cooling capacities of my T3, and I have had it for more than a year, without using a turbo timer or a cool-down period, and have zero leaks and no coking.

Yes, you may get an argument, but water cooling is cheap insurance. Maybe you don't need it, but what if you do? It is easier to use it, keep your turbo A LOT cooler and be safe, than to lose a 800$ turbo... Cooler is better, bottom line.

Re: (94lsboost)
If you have a turbo that has a coolant jacket, then cool it... if not, don't worry about it...
I bought my turbo shortly after finishing "Maximum Boost", in which Corky Bell explains the benefits of water cooling the turbo...
when I ordered my turbo I had the option of water cooled or not... I ordered the water cooled turbo but didn't hook up the water lines right away because I couldn't find the right fittings... Just last weekend I got around to hooking up the water lines... I feel much better about it now, I used to wait about a minute before getting out of the car, now I wait less, which is nice....
I don't think there are any performance benefits to water cooling, but the lower temp will decrease coking and increase the life of the turbo, which is a good thing...

you've got to have coolant port in the center cartridge... if you don't.. then u can't.

Re: Turbo cooling.... (andysila)
well if the turbo is cooled with water. it will cause the car to run a little hotter since the turbo it self will be producing a lot of heat during operation and that heat will be transferred over to your water, as a result it will cause the car to reach its thermostat temperature a lot faster than before so your cooling cycles would be more rapid than before... but you are cooling the turbo down but heating up your water faster.
If I were in your shoes I would get a oil cooler (greddy,HKS,Blitz) it will help out the whole system buy cooling down the oil temp. If you are planning to road race with a turbo, it is a must to get the oil cooler since the EGTS will be real high.
