Default Turbo BOV / CBV problems and questions...

Hey Guys...

I have been planning on using a nice "blow off valve" I got
from a volvo...i've already had the flange welded up to my
charge piping and all.

Here is an exact picture of what I have:
http://rothfam.com/svo/volvo/bypass.htm

I just read this other informative website regarding bypass
valves and it relates this one I have (a Pierburg) to the
Bosch plastic valve:
<A HREF="http://wwwrsphysse.anu.edu.au/~amh110/Technical_pages/blow_off_valve.htm
" TARGET="_blank">http://wwwrsphysse.anu.edu.au/~amh11..._off_valve.htm
</a>

It says the one I have (the metal Pierburg) is a CBV and is
different than a BOV...Will mine work since it is a CBV? What's
the deal here? It says they are open under engine vacuum, etc...

It seems to work just like the 1g dsm eclipse one I have as well...
large inlet hole bottom with piston which moves upwards...the outside
outlet pipe of the same diameter relieves the pressure to the
atmosphere or back to the manifold if it has the hose on it. It
also has the small outlet at the top for a vacuum source. Can I
still use this or am I on crack?

Jason

A bypass valve is like a BOV, except the vented boost pressure is routed back to the intake. Does that help at all?

A BPV will be open under vacuum to relieve the engine of the load pulling air through a slow-turning small compressor like most stock turbo cars have. This can be a problem if you use it as a BOV since it will probably be drawing unfiltered air into your engine. If you plumb the BPV bypass back to your intake so it draws in air after the filter (the way it would be installed on a stock turbo setup), you're good to go.
