Default Turbo 4afe.

I'm really debating on going boost with my Geo Prizm. It has the toyota corolla motor in it. Im trying to find a nice decent kit but most of them are all really shitty. I dont know what kind of engine managment i could run, being that im not to familar with how toyotas are in that section (hondurs on the other hand i am)

Yes i may be young but i tihnk this would be a good project for me to start. not to expensive and motors are like a dime a dozen. and wont have to much power for that matter

any insight would be nice

-snag a K03 from an Audi
-build a simple setup HMT style
-if you cant find anything better, use an SAFC (or FMU as a last resort)

get some pics of this project if you decide to do it....hopefully someone that knows more about tuning Toyotas can chime in and get this rollin

what car did the k03 come on? i was just thinking maybe a basic t3/t4 or something of that sort but i would have to go with a homemade mani if anything. there is a kit out there right now that is going for like 2500 with an SAFC and everything i need i believe. let me see if i can find it....

edit: here is the kit. the actual kit.

I boosted my 97 3 speed auto corolla about 6 years ago. It has the 4afe which is the same motor in yours. I ran an IHI from a mazda GT mx6, log manifold, external pump and an FMU, had the boost up to 15psi before it tossed a rod...i didnt know much back then, stock timing, plugs, check valves, but hell it hauled *** for a summer.. loved that car

6 years ago, looks damn good, looks better than most stuff today for a home built set up

Oh damn Corollas something I actually know about lmao. I turbo'd my 7AFE and it's pretty fun. You should do the 20v Blacktop swap instead, it's badass NA stuff. If you need any tips on it feel free to PM. Here's mine.

I might as well do what I can do help cause I know I will be asking alot of questions about my honda.

that is what im wondering. im mostly worrying about how im going to run my ems. i dont want an safc tune because that will cut it, while cutting corners, but not a full ems. i need that for much MUCH more reliabilty.

as for psi, i was thinking no more than 10 or so. just want it to be nice and streetable. dont really know what kind of power goals i want since this is an almost bone stock car and im 17 so i dont need an assload of horserpower. 200whp should be just enough for me maybe 225

One kid that went to my school had a pre 96 camry that was built and turboed. Since it ran of the map sensor and all the other sensors worked just like honda ones (same voltage and all that good stuff) he made a jumper harness for a honda ecu and he tuned it with that. You could prolly do the same to that motor.

But like somebody said you might want to look into a levin 20v swap. That engine is dirt cheap. I don't know the engine code but it had ITBs and 5 valves per cylinder. It makes pretty good power n/a. I think it's like 600-900 or some **** like that and it usually comes with a trans.

See now you got me thinking I work for toyota and I don't even do anything fun with those cars... uhhhmmm

20V 4A-GE silvertop makes about 130hp... nothing drastic... blacktop makes a bit more. I'd go with the supercharged 16V one... but then again turboing the econo engine goes just fine.

why not turbo the blacktop 20v and tune it with a honda ecu, aslong as it really would work.

Seems like it would cheap enough.

20V compression is high for that 11:1 IIRC and getting low compression pistons for it isnt the cheapest or the easiest task.

Kind of along the same lines as the 4afe is my setup with a turbo 4age in my first gen mr2. I'm running megasquirt to control both ignition and fuel. Once setup, everything works great. I ended up dynoing at 193hp and 160ish tq.

I got a K03 sport with ~40,000 miles that came off a car I parted out because it was run into a ditch..... completely taco'd the subframe and bent the unibody... motor and interior, etc were fine. 01 Jetta MKIV 1.8T. It has zero shaftplay, and i can include the downpipe flange and reducer seen in the pics above, also the OEM exhaust manifold+gasket so you can see what it was mounted to and the flanges, etc; exhaust manifold optional on your behalf... I have several vouches here and on turbod16.com.

$150 for the turbo... +shipping Good price for a low mile turbo with the exhaust flange off the VW downpipe.

4afe? I knew that sounded familiar. I had a 7afe '97 corolla that was turbo, running 7 psi from a custom made kit using a t3/t4, built by a local shop. It was never dyno'd but it was a lot of fun to drive. I was using an fmu cause I ran out of money for an engine management, but was told that SDS (simple digital systems) was my best option. I got rid of the 7afe turbo setup and did a 4age silvertop swap, figuring that would be a better choice, performance wise.

Ya Tony, I think I remember your name on the toyota nation board? You were just starting to do up the camry. There wasn't many turbo SC cars back then, let alone corollas (HiRolla was my username..lol) Just me and my friend Eric from London who has a 4agze swap in the same gen corolla, we used to battle it out all the time, S/C vs turbo!

if i boosted this car i would just have trouble fabbing up some I/C piping. and finding an intercooler that would fit, i dont want a SMIC i want a FMIC lol. looks better

i will probably just run like 7psi for a bit, but wouldn't boost till i had it tuned, thats for damn sure. not wanting to pop the motor

Dynoed my car up to 4000rpm, we got about 195hp. Exhaust pressure goes too high after that, need some adjustments.

A friend of mine here actually used a 4AGZE (Levin motor) and made a custom intake and exhaust manifold when he converted it from SC to turbo. Not sure if it was a direct bolt.

Quick Reply: Turbo 4afe.
