Default Turbine resistant to spin.

So I got this good condition gt2056v of an 07 mercedes. The think looks great. I took off the compressor housing and when i spin the wheel, it only rotates about 1 time to 1.5 times. I have a t3 off of a 80's audi, and that thing will spin for about 2-3 seconds. I took the turbo apart, cleaned all the vanes, and cleaned some of the soot on near the turbine seal rings. I took out the whole turbine shaft, and spun it in just the journal bearing, and it spins fine, but if the turbine seems to have a lot of friction where the seal rings are. I put everything back together, and filled the center section with oil. I used a air compressor to spin the turbo, and the fastest it would spin is about 200 rpms, and was very resistant. Does this turbo just need to be broke in, or should I replace the turbine seals/ rebuild the whole thing? The bearing seemed to be in good condition.

Sorry if this is a stupid question. Its seems weird that an 80's t3 would spin alot easier than this 07 gt turbo.

Thanks

One may still have oil in the cartidge assembly more than the other. its a question of the condition of the cartridge and any oil in it. These turbos are not going to spin very freely regardless, so it is not the best determining factor as to whether or not a turbo is "good". Oil both assemblies by putting oil in the feed line and rotating slowly. It will free up a bit. After that, put it down and work on the car. too many people continually spin the turbo dry, not understanding that the scoring on the shaft could cause problems later.

Thanks for the info. This turbo just has one long cartridge assembly. The turbo wont be installed till later this year. The resistance comes from the turbine seal rings. the journal rotates good. I think it will free up after some usage.

Thanks
