Tuning VAFC with a SafeGuard
My local dyno operator is a flake and has now canceled on me for the fourth time in a month.
I'm thinking about tuning my VAFC between 5000rpm and redline by pulling fuel in 2% increments until I hear the knock alarm go off and then reverting that particular RPM setting back up 2% and continuing to reduce fuel at other RPMs in the same way.
Any thoughts on this?
Could I end up with a too lean A/F mix this way? Would it even matter since the SafeGuard is there to watch my back?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Tuning VAFC with a SafeGuard (Holden)
Be careful. I had the vafc with 9psi of boost and ended up cracking my pistons from running to lean. I know the vafc is cool but you might consider selling it and getting the JRSC vtec controller. I think that it would be safer since all of the guessing has been done for you. I couldn't find a dyno guy who actually knew how to work the vafc and apex was no help. It is very complicated if you haven't figured it out already. If you are running 10psi I would also suggest a boost timing controller if you don't already have one. I have a Jackson Racing boost/timing controller and Liquid Intercooler system for sale if you are interested. stale1@***.net

Someone with the DIY wideband might live near you. If so, you could borrow that and it'd be a lot safer to street tune with.
The vafc method you talk about *seems* safe enough though.
If you have access to a voltmeter you could hook it up to your primary o2 and watch for a lean condition there, in addition to the j&s.

(lemme go dig up some links so maybe i wont come across as being so vague...)

Re: Tuning VAFC with a SafeGuard (stale1 '01 itr 616)
I have a JR BTC already. I run .6 degrees/psi retard with stock timing.
I also have a J&S SafeGuard with both visible and audible retard monitors, so I know when I'm getting detonation and am protected against it. I'll drive though 1-2 degrees ignition retard when autocrossing, but I don't get any detonation dragging. I don't ever see more than 3 degrees of retarding from the J&S.
I've been able to tune my FPR, FMU and BTC very successfully using the J&S. I think it should do the same for the VAFC.
I'm just wondering if anyone has ever tuned by using a SafeGuard and has later seen good or bad results.

Re: Tuning VAFC with a SafeGuard (Tomakit)
Hey... I lived in New Brunswick and North Brunswick for many years. Commercial Avenue Baby!!! (In case you're now wondering, I'm white. No offense meant to anyone.).
I do have an A/F meter. I'll definitely be watching where that goes. Currently I'm getting a rich reading at WOT at all RPM's.
Hey... "All the goodies" isn't a deception! I've dumped too much money into this car already.

Haha, commercial ave. My apt is two min from there (Hamilton St).
Good luck with the vafc tuning. I'm sure itll be fine using the js.

Hidden Lake Apartments off of Rt. 27. Lived there from 94-97. Nice area, but I couldn't handle that traffic anymore after getting used to upstate NY.
