Default Tuning Questions (Camshaft Setting Discussion Only)

Couple of questions for you guys. This segment will pertain to CAMS (<U>only</U>) on your turbo charged vehicles (preferably stock blocks).

High hp guys are welcomed to

Question 1) What do you have your INtake cam set at?
Question 2) What do you have your EXhaust cam set at?
Question 3) ...and why? (in detail please)
Question 4) Can I see graphs to back up the information given?

**Feel free to add any additional information you see suitable for this thread**

Thanks in advance

unless their motor is decked or milled or the height is changed, most cars make the most power at 0,0.

so when you are tuning you don't even bother with the cam gear settings?
Are they (they=adjustable cam gear setting) mostly for N/a guys then?

yes, most boosted cars ive tuned w/ stock cams, usually make the most power at 0,0. now NA cars, sometimes u gotta play with them to move the power band... turbo is a different game though...

I disagree. You want the opposite of overlap if you're boosting air into the engine so that the valves close with the motion of air helping them.

I got about 10hp out of setting my exhaust gear at the dyno.

I am not too sure but I think I'm at -3 intake +2 exhaust on the AEM's (1 = 2degrees). I'll double check when I go home.

It's probably different on every setup out there though. This is on a Skunk2 IM with 10psi and Hondata.

maybe i should have said, most area under the curve. ive seen them make power maybe up top just a little, but lose midrange or so... once u start playing around w/ ur cam timing, it moves the power band. u can gain 10 whp on a turbo car by just letting it cool off for a few minutes. Ive done testing many times, and its not worth spending $180 bucks or whatever on cam gears unless the head is modified.

Not saying you're completely wrong, it very well have made 10 whp, but what were your testing conditions, and do you have a comparison graph before and after?

It was a somewhat controlled environment (lots of fans, winter time, dynapack). After the full Hondata tune, we moved on to the gears and did a few pulls with different settings. The exhaust played the bigger role. Any other even minute setting would offset the power curve pretty bad.

Another tune a few months later got me curious again so I played around and same result. Even 1 degree would make the curve drop or introduce other undesirables.

Unfortunately we did not think this was that big of a deal to keep a chart so I didn't save a copy. I'm sure I could go pull it from the dyno file though. A full Hondata tune yielded much more so the gears were not all that exciting at that point

good info!

"Mase"
how heavy of head mods would you say would be needed to justify cam settings? valvetrain only or a full $1200+ head package?

"Boofster"
If you can please show the dyno results
