tuning question
I've been researching how to turbo my motor on a budget, and basically i've decided to run 7-8psi on my stock JDM B18C. With maybe a block guard, and most likely a 2-3mm head gasket. From what i understand this is totally possible, but everyone keeps saying tuning is the key? I plan on doing most of this work myself, but how would i "tune" the motor, is dyno time necessary? basically i'd like to know what you guys are using to ensure that your motor is getting the right mixture of air and fuel, and the timing and what not....thanks for your help.
You should be ok running 7-8psi on stock computer with fmu. You don't need the block guard, I dislike them. Tuning is only the key if you have something to tune it with. You will need to purchase a engine management system such as a hondata, aem, dfi, speedpro aka fast, etc... Without a engine management system which can control the fuel and timing maps etc. then you can not tune.
Tuning can be done on the street or on the dyno. What I usually do is tune partial throttle on the street and then WOT on the dyno.

You can also get away with doing the afc hack---you did mention your on a budget and this is very low $'s compared to shelling out cash for standalones, hondata being the least amount with their entry level product. If you want the ultimate in tuning/monotoring a/f get yourself a wideband o2 controller like the new techedge v2.0 that is coming out soon.
did some reading on homemadeturbo.com, and it seems that a standalone system is gonna be a little out of my pricerange. What exactly is the afc hack? thanks
nevermind, i answered my own question.....afc hack is what i'll probably be doing...this thread rocks my face off https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=137901
