Tranny problems, can't put car in 3 or 4th???
THis is the story, I just bought a spare tranny (GSR tranny) supposedly a 2001 with alittle over 10, 000 miles. I put it in the car last week and took it for a spin last week and it was excellent, Silky smooth like my original. Well I put my turbo in today and leave my driveway and the car will not go into 3 or 4 wont even grind in there. THere are no leaks and I put in a stage 4 competion clutch with flywheel. I am tired and needs some help as to the possible issues with the tranny. I checked the linkage, and slave and all looks good. THere is a noticeable noise when the car is off and I move the shift lever. THe noise was not there before but nevertheless it is definately related as none of my other cars make this noise.
THe tranny shift perfectly to 1 and second also 5th and reverse just not 3 or fourth. I can't even put it in there.
Thanks for the hep

Re: Tranny problems, can't put car in 3 or 4th??? (sc4dr)
My question is what is wrong with my tranny as I can not put it in 3rd or 4th gear. I installed the tranny last week to ensure that it was good and I went ahead and installed my clutch as I was going to install the turbo. I drove it that day (last weekend and all was good) I did not drive far just a block. I installed my turbo this weekend and when I took it out it did what I stated. Other then having no 3rd or 4th the tranny shifts fine in 1st and 2nd and 5th and reverse. It does not keak, and there is a weird noise fron the shifter when the car is off and one wobbles the shifter in neutral. Even with the car off I can not put it in 3rd or 4th.

You're sure nothing is blocking your linkage? Other than that you need to pull your tranny back off and check out your clutch install.

Re: Tranny problems, can't put car in 3 or 4th??? (sc4dr)
clutch install???? this is the 10th one I have done. How can it be the clutch if the other gears are fine? I am not saying I could have done something wrong although I doubt it, but if it were the clutch it would affect all the gears right. There is a strange noise coming from the linkage when the car is off. I will check the clutch when I pull the tranny again but I believe it is in the tranny. Any help would be great. thanks

I understand, it shifts fine into all the gears except 3-4, Can;t even push it in there with the car off or on. I actually drove the car and noticed when leaving my community that I could not shift into 3 or 4th. I can put it in 5th. Just wondering what in the tranny causes this.

I was looking in the helms manual and think it may be the 3rd/4th gear shift fork in the tranny as I can not put the car in those gears, any opinions. THe other gears are fine with no grinding.

I'd pop the bitch pin out and remove the linkage. THen try to put it in 3rd and 4th by hand using a screwdriver (straight back and forth). That'll narrow your scope down to inside or outside of the transmission.
If it's really an internal problem, it's probably a bad 3-4 synchro sleeve, possibly in combination with a worn 3-4 shift fork.
You'll have to buy a new 3-4 synchro set (includes sleeve, hub, and a pair of brass synchros & synchro springs) and possibly the 3-4 shift fork.

Re: Tranny problems, can't put car in 3 or 4th??? (IN VTEC)
I know it is in the tranny as this shift linkage was in with my orginal tranny which is excellent. How much is the gear set and fork, and where can I get this? So not being able to put it in 3rd or 4th at all is caused by the sleave?? I though it would be the fork as there is a distinct sound from inside the tranny that comes through the forkwhen moved from left to right and vice versa. It is like a click with a low screech like something in the tranny is preventing me from putting it into the 3-4 gear slot. If that makes sence. Thanks

The teeth on the sleeve get deformed until the sleeve can't slide up and down on the synchro hub without binding and preventing the sleeve from fully engaging the gear's dog teeth.
You may also need new mainshaft 3rd and 4th gears because the dog teeth also wear.

- see MAINSHAFT for the parts diagram and breakdown

it can't be a problem with the clutch or the flywheel.
i would drain the fluid and if you see a bunch of metal shavings then you know what the deal is.
be honest though. were you powershifting or anything of the sort?
IMO it's always best to repair what you have, that way you KNOW what the final product will be

I'd second this as well.....
It's possible you even have a bent 3-4 selector fork...

Re: Tranny problems, can't put car in 3 or 4th??? (Bense)
Well after about 12 hours of researching and IM'ing people EVS-One Imed me and told me it was related to the fork, or the sleeve gear but he also told me to check the detent ball bolt for the fork under the tranny. Sure enough I went under there and loosened it and clicked, I knew it was fixed went into the car and it is shifting into third and fourth easy as butta. Thanks I wil ltake it for a test drive now.

I've never seen that one before. It makes sense now, but I never imagined that overtightening that bolt would even be possible.

the detents have crush washers just like the oil drain bolt. then a spring and a metal ball that hold the shift fork foward and keep it in place.. theres grooves on the shaft of the shift fork the detent ***** sit in.
