The honda manual shows that the torque specification for the oil pan on the b18c is 9 ft lbs. Even when installed the myHondaHabit oil pan gasket and stud kit they recommended the 9 ft lbs of torque on the nuts. If you doubt it, check the manual or see the specs at www.myhondahabit.com

If you got to 10 ft lbs, your are increasing the torque by 1/10th of the recommended amount... I wouldn't.

Thats a bit over the top. For a start i bet no one has a torque wrench thats capable of giving you smack on 9 ft lbs. I always do them hand tight and have never had a problem. I have a good feel with bolts though.

I have one, and I'm more than sure there are plenty others out there that have them as well.

There never smack bang on what you set them to though. They'll always be +-X% out.

What i'm trying to get at is 1 ft lbs isnt going to be the end of the world.

I have a Snapon torque wrench that is dead on. I've built 3 motors with it. I can get the 9 lb ft mark with no problem. Now, if you are going to Harbor Freight for your torque wrench, good luck. I have one of those too. That's how I decided upon getting the Snapon.

Typerwhat is right - 10 lb ft is an 11% increase over the recommendation, and when it comes to torque, that is massive, well outside what a good torque wrench's margin for error is. The biggest issue with this is that the oem gasket can't handle 10 lb ft properly without tearing and the oil pan is stamped steel so it bends at the bolt holes when they are overtorqued, causing an uneven sealing surface for the gasket. That spells leaks as many of us know. The OEM oil pan is super sensitive to torque. That is probably why the myhondahabit gasket calls for the same torque specification. Their gasket will take more torque, but the pan won't.

you really dont need a torque wrench on oil pan bolts. use a 1/4 drive socket and just make them snug.

critical said it right....

I went by the book with my last build for the torque spec and it ended up ripping the gasket!! That's the ONLY thing I've come across like that in the manual. Now all I do is tighten the fasteners and watch for the gasket to squeeze away from the pan slightly. All this is also working from the "center" bolts and criss-crossing my way outward. I haven't had an issue since doing that.

Thats exactly what i think still. There is no need to be totally **** about them. Just don't get using a bar to tighten them up lol.
