UPDATE!!!! Timing belt on my GSR broke..
While driving home today my timing belt broke.. is it garanteed that my valves will be bent? is there a chance that they will be ok? I have a new belt and I'm gonna try it out tomorrow. I just wanna know what to expect.. Also any tips for getting the crank pulley off?
UPDATE!!! I just finished putting it back together and looks like everything is fine. I did a compression test and they are all from 210-225 which is normal for it and it runs good.
to let everyone know I ended up getting a chain wrench at sears and used that to hold the crank.. then I had to use my leg and a 3' breaker bar to get the bolt loose.
Thanks for the advise..

no, i'm pritty shure your fucked. for the crank pully, get a chain wrench from sears, and hit the bolt with a bad *** impact (read snap-on), or use a 3' long breaker bar. how many miles where u at when it snaped?

I'm at about 150k miles and I was just crusing along at about 55mph when it happened.. I came out of a construction zone and hit the gas and nothing.
My book says to get a strap wrench.. is that the same thing as a chain wrench..
btw I don't know if this is the original belt or not..

I have worked on 2 b18s with broken Tbelts and both were fine with a new belt. I have also seen many more that crunched the valves. A belt is cheap and easy so put it on and crank it around a few times slowly and listen carefully. IF it checks out do a waterpump and tensioner and try to drive it. gotta love interference motors
If the crank bolt is stuck try heating up the washer behind it. Has never failed me.

You can always start the car without the drive belts and cover on just to check. It may save you some time.

yup, chain and strap wrench are the same, just uses different materials to hold it.
rubber belt or chain is the obvious difference.
you may find a strap wrench to be more versatile, you can use it on other projects as well, where the chain might scar something up.

or you can stick a screwdriver or prybar into the teeth of the flywheel. Or get an impact gun with lots of torque.
How many miles were on that belt/ was it the original belt??
