I am trying to put a lsd into my GSR tranny. However it comes with the tapered bearings and I would like to swap it out with the ball bearings (my GSR uses ball bearings). Now here comes the hard part, how do I remove the tapered bearings from the LSD? I brought it to 3 machine shops and they all say that I have to cut it out and want to charge me 60-70 bucks for it. Heck if it is only cutting, my air grinder can do that. I thought you can press it out or something easier.

Only thing I can think of is you might be able to get the diff really cold (ICE) and then blowtorch the old bearings while tapping them or prying them off......you'd have to do it quick though, because the whole thing would heat through fast......
You also might be able to use a pittman arm puller to grab under the bearing and then slowly get it off of there....I want to say we did something like this with mine, but I can't remember.....I know there was something with a pittman arm puller somewhere......I'm braindead

Most machine shop and import auto repair places should do it for like 20-30. What we did was just broke off the outter piece and all the bearings came off. The shop had a press and a bearing puller and took it off with a breeze.

you should be able to pull it off wit ha 3 prong bearing puller.

I wasnt able to. The fingers are wider than the bearing to carrier clearance.

I used a 3 arm...my little wedges are really thin though(customized )

to use my bearing buller i had to remove the rollers off of the inner race.

That is what I use. Or tony1, what ever is fastest. But I say stick with the roller bearings rather than the ball bearings.
