Supercharging question
i heard from someone that i'm not allowed to use 5th gear if my car is supercharged?
is that true?
does that hold true with turbo charged cars too?

whoever told you that must be a few logs short of a campfire.....this board is full of people running turbos and SC's and I garantee they are using ALL their gears! The only thing you should consider is upgrading your clutch to handle the extra power...

its true. but u can solve this problem by adding stickers. by adding stickers to ur car, it creates more power eliminating the use of 5th gear to make the same power.

that's messed up, i was asking an innocent question and i get ripped by 10 guys.
nah, someone did say that to me... and i tried looking on jackson-racing.com and all the dyno test were at 4th gear.
so i wasn't sure

Most dyno pulls are done in 3rd or 4th gears whether your car is all motor or forced induction. This is because they are trying to get as close to a 1:1 ratio for the best/most accurate power measurements. 1:1 means for every one revolution of the engine, your drivetrain also turns approx one revolution as well.

Corky Bell (author of Maximum Boost, which is a great read btw), recommends that you don't stay in full boost for more than 20 seconds. Now that's even really possible until you get into 5th gear. Maybe that's what the person was trying to get at, or maybe they're just full of crap.

this is what i heard too. And it makes sense to... no car was ever designed to stay in boost forever. And you can only do that in 5th (6th if you got it). All other gears you'd be force to shift.... 5th... you can sit there for a while and most motors I would believe cannot withstand that type of load + heat build up. But to not be able to use 5th at all... that is dumbening.

It's not gullible... not boosting in 5th gear, or for that matter 4th gear, was good solid advice - about four years back when the FMU was king. The tendency for heat to build up in the combustion chamber during long high gear pulls under boost is a valid point, but the problem stems from sustained high fuel pressure with an FMU setup.
