squealing noise during boost in low gears...but not upper ones????
I get a really loud squealing noise when I floor it in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The noise starts up at around 2psi and get's louder as I approach 8 psi (wastegate setting). However, there is no sign of thise noise in 4th or 5th gear. It just pulls really nicely.
Any ideas what this could be. I had thought that it could be belts, but wouldn't it make the noises reguardless of what gear I'm in? Any help would be great, thanks.

man, my friend jordan is having this similar problem - it's like a squealing vibrating kind of noise. One the master techs where he works at toyota said it sounded something like a pilot shaft bearing going bad. He's just gonna get a new tranny as he can probably get one for less than $200.

this car is only a '99...and I've only been boosting for about 400 miles. Could the tranny be going already? And if they are the belts....what would be a way to make them stop squealing....if there some kind of cleaner that I could spray on them or something?
Thanks

Sounds like you know by now.

hmmm.....I also recall that I would get a similar squealing noise whenever I would left off the gas quickly. It would only be a short squeal, about 1 second. Would that be clutch/tranny related as well?
Thanks

I'd say check all belts...betcha thats it...Then if that doesn't do it...Check to see how your turbo is...the old wobble test. But I am sure the turbo is fine if it is a new install. Is it a whining sound ?

I'm really hoping that it's just the belts. How do I check them? Just check the tension? However, why would it only make the noise in the lower gears and not so much in the upper ones? The turbo's not new however, but once again it's pushing as much boost in the lower gears and the higher ones...but the noise is only in the lower gears. hmmmmmm....but it still pulls nice.

If your belts are loose...they will not always make a sound at differnet rpm's..... it can be at certain rpm's you would hear the noise...usually lower rpm's....just grab hold of em and tug...if you can pull more than say 2 inches they are too loose !!

I've checked all my belts and they're on pretty tight. Could they be on too tight?
