Default Spoon Sports 4.7 FD tranny

What you guys think about this tranny? It's actually a jdm itr tranny. Is this tranny would be great for forced induction? Don't you guys think it's a little too short gear ratio? Anyone using this tranny? and what you think. http://www.inlinefour.com have them. Check it out.

not good for FI. you need something like a 4.2 or 4.0. that is a high acceleration FD. You want a high speed FD.

But why most people here prefer short gear rather than long gear so that you don't drop your power band when shifting.

Not true... unless you are going for top speed. You want a "high acceleration FD" if you are trying to accelerate! Hondas aren't made for top speed runs! You don't make more power at 5k than at 6.5k right? Why would you want to fall out of your powerband when you shift. The longer gear turbo idea is a misconception from way back.

What works for each one is really the case I guess. I guess in the US, you need high acceleration tranny for your trafic.

Yes, hondas were not made for top speed runs but were not driving stock Hondas aren't we? We can build it any way we want. I think hondata/progress/vortech made a top speed honda. so certainly they can be used for top speed.

I don't care less about the ls,gsr and type-r tranny. Yes you want to remain in your power band that is why you decide when to shift. I don't like driving 60mph at 3500 rpm in 5th when i can do it in 2500-3000rpm.

Anyway, it will always be a matter of choice. but for me i'd go for the 4.4FD. If I have enough power in my engine I'd go for the lowest possible FD ratio. You lose time when you shift. the gear ratios will decide the rpm band not the FD. FD is constant.

I say this from my experience with playing with my Final Drives but tony's experiene seem otherwise. So, again there are many ways to skin a cat. If everybody were using the same thing then there wouldn't be any improvement. Do we see the same kind of engines in 10sec all motor cars? No, we have all kinds. long stroke, short stroke, big bore, very high comp, high rpm engines.

let me make it clearer. FD do not affect RPM shift and drop points. Using the same tranny, a change from 4.4 to 4.7 will have the same rpm but the only diference is speed. at 9000 rpm (1st) your speed is slower using a 4.7 tranny. when you shift at 9000, it doesn't matter if the FD is 4.4 or 4.7, with the same tranny it will drop at around 5500-6000 rpm.

acceleration is directly related to gear ratio plain and simple....longer gears? fine...lower accel and the oppisite is the same. Its simple math. This is all assuming you have traction lol...

gsr tranny
quaife lsd
JDM 4.78 FD

thats my setup...with 24.5 slicks i will still see 130 or so in the 1/4.....which is more then ill need

for now anyways lol

BTW: the lowest FD is 4.2 not 4.4

If i had a turbo i would use a USDM ITR tranny with a 4.440 diff....Or even a USDM GSR tranny with Lsd....The way i look at it is the faster you get to the RPMs the faster your going to get to that speed...

A 4.7 or a 4.9 diff is for N/A motors...autocross motors...not good for going straight in a 1/4 with turbo....

People think to use a LS tranny..I dont think so...if you take 2 people with the same set up and one had a ITR tranny and the other had a LS tranny..the one with the ITR tanny is shifting gears while the LS tranny is still in the gear...the one with the ITR is long gone because he is getting to that MPH faster then the LS tranny would even think about...Thats my 2 cents...And VIC you dont have to listen to me

the transmission is the single most important and expensive part of building a race car the correct way...even more so then the motor...once this sport gets taken to that level we will have to deal with the shortest gears possible that are available, unless you have around 20g's for the tranny.. but either way for going fast in the 1320 you want short gears or the shortest gears that your setup will alow....

I havent heard about engine power yet for this equation.... Not just where your power band but how much tq will dictate gear ratios.... Look at the Phatridz Neon, 3 speed, Automatic.... I bet there final drive is close to the LS 4.26 ratio...they may not have had the most power a yr ago but the had a torque convertor. This allowed them to mutiply tq to the wheels better than stick cars. So in all , a Honda could use the LS tran ratio of 4.26 but we need an incredible amount of tq to get it to accelerate just as fast as someone using 4 speeds and a 4.4 or 4.7 . And the correct launch and use of the clutch could keep things from breaking too....
