Default Some boost questions from HOLLAND :)

Hello guys!

I am from the The Netherlands and i have a question for you all...
I've posted this topic at HT beacause in my country they don't know that much about boosting problems... hehe

specs:
jdm b16a gen 2
T3/T40E .63/.50
tial wastegate
greddy bov
custom equall lenght ramhorn
cxracing ic with samco's and stainless steele piping
2,5'' downpipe with 2,5'' SS midpipe and muffler
jdm p30 ecu
ECtune chipped
6 psi (about 240 hp)
etc.

I have got a few questions and i hope that you all can help me!!

#1: I've got a oil feed line (-3an) with a restrictor (1,6 mm) is that a correct restrictor for this turbo? (www.cxracing.com, and than the first turbo in the chargerlist)?????

#2: Can i make a ventilation tip on the back of my valvecover ???? 1 at the original place and one about 20 cm to the right????

#3: Is a 3'' downpipe a better size for the downpipe (with a 2,5'' midpipe) than a 2,5'' downpipe? Because i only drive at 6 psi.......

#4: When i have driven at about 8000 rpm and lose the throttle, the car does not smoke.... blue smoke i mean. But when i hit the thorttle when i am driving about 60 km p/h to speed up, it blows big blue smoke. Not when you shift or something, only in this situation.... is that an incorrect oil return????

Thank you guys!!!

1. yes, correct restrictor
2. yes, the more pressure you can vent the better.
3. Larger downpipe is always better, but at your low psi level, 2.5 should be fine.
4. Sounds like your PCV valve is clogged. If you pull it out and shake it it should rattle, if it doesn't its bad. You should remove your pcv valve when you are adding your pressure vents from question #2.

Remember this....the pcv valve does not vent ANY pressure when in boost because the positive pressure keeps the pcv closed.

1: ok, good to know, because i was'nt sure abou the size.

2: Will i not get any problems with oil in my ventilation hoses and catchcan?

i havn't got the pcv valve anymore. Just the original on the valvecover an 1 on top of the black box (without the pcv and hose on the manifold)

I think i need a larger ventilation, because it smokes a little bit, as i told....
Know i have taken off my catchcan filter and i becomes less.... so thats good news!!!

3: A lager downpipe isn't that usefull at low boost you think, but how about spooling up the turbo earlyer???

4: You think it's a ventilation problem??? like no. 2??

And: I know that the pcv doesn't work in boost, because there is no vacuum.... only in idle or without spooling up...

thanx mate!!

I may be wrong on the restrictor, for a Non Ball bearin turbo, the restrictor needs to be 0.125 Inch.

The one you have is, 1.6 millimeters which is equal to 0.06 inches.

your restrictor is good for that turbo.

The blue smoke is probably your pistion rings not sealing properly. I would guess you have some broken ringlands. Getting you crankcase vents flowing better might reduce it but I think you are burning oil in the motor.

piston rings are the rings in the cilinderhead around the pistons from the valves though?

But there is no oil on my catchcan, is that correct??

The turbo is maybe 2000 kms old (new), so the seals must be ok.....

On hondas the thin parts (ringlands)between the rings tends to crack if the motor doesnt run perfectly, then it burns oil. You can still have good compression and not get lots of oil in the catch can if the ringlands are broken. It happens all the time on these stock pistons, thats why i think its likely on your car.

I agree the seals are probably good on the turbo. when the oil burns in the turbo it is usually white smoke. if it burns in the engine it's usually blue.

open up the crankcase vents more like you were talking about first. that might help.

Lot of work replacing them?? price?

i promise, if the turbo oil seals go on the turbine side you will see white smoke. I dont know why but thats how it is. and no they are easy to replace. the basic parts are under $50 for a journal bearing garrett turbo.

oil is a slight blueish smoke, whether it comes from the turbo or the motor.

I've seen plenty turbos that made plumes of white smoke, maybe its not white white, but its nothing like a motor that burns the same amount in the combustion chamber.

Contact Sneaky Tunning User SSVTI on this site (they are closed till june 22 though)
Or PM Semnos on this forum. one of them will be able to help you out with engine rebuild, parts, turbo and tunning.

Best of the best in holland period.

i know them! they are also logged on an other forum in holland. Honda-fanatics and hondaperformance.

I have also posted this topic at those fora......

But still not sure about the smoke..... a lot of people say that it is not a block problem, but a turbo problem like: ventilation, oil pressure, seals, restrictor.... etc..

Take the turbo off and check for oil buildup in your manifold before the turbo, or in the charge piping.
In my experience when the turbo start blowing oil it will smoke on and off depending if the engine is under boost or not.

Do a compression and a leakdown test to rule out engine damage.
