SMC + DSM 450 troubles
What's up Honda-Tech, long-time reader, first time poster.
Ok, I have a 96 Civic with a b18b and a drag 3 kit. this weekend I installed a new fuel rail and adjustable fuel pressure regulator, 450cc DSM injectors with 10W 10 Ohm resistors, a walboro 255lph intank pump, and a SMC. I have gone back and checked all of my wiring, which I soldered, and everything seems to be ok.
Now here's the problem: the car will start, and if I rev it, it will do that ok, but it will not idle. If I don't step on the gas, the car will die immediately after I start it. It also smells like unburnt fuel is coming out of my exhaust. I know this must mean the smc isn't tuning the injectors right, but I did a test with a volt meter, and it looked like the map voltage was being trimmed ok. Something like 1.2v - .7v. I just don't understand what it could be. I pulled the rpm signal from the line going from my msd box to my tach. I've tried fiddling with the % trim on the smc, but no matter what I put it at, it does the same thing. Any help would be great

Your fuel pressure is too high.
Check your fuel pressurea nd the FPR to verify they are correct.
My bet is the new 255 pump is too much for the stock fpr. You may need a bypass hole or a seperate fpr.
I know that is the problem because I had it too.

Ok, I pulled the adjustment screw all the way out of my fpr (which is a venom, by the way- I got it for cheap!) It seemed to idle a little longer... is there any way to reduce my fuel pressure any more??

i thought u had to keep everything stock for the smc and 450s to work, just like the vafc hack, so i agree, put ur stock fpr back in

Re: SMC + DSM 450 troubles
Well, I borrowed a Fuel Pressure Gauge, and it says my fuel pressure is about 40psi at idle. It's still running so rich that it backfires at any sort of rpm, and dies if left at idle. Could the SMC be malfunctioning? I'm getting close to being out of ideas.
Is it possible to attach the stock fpr to an aftermarket rail?

Re: SMC + DSM 450 troubles
Ok, I trimmed the fuel pressure, and hooked up the vacuum line to the input, and have tried everything from 15psi at idle back up to the 40 I had originally. None of those changes seems to have made any difference.
I pulled my plugs, and they are all very fouled. Is it possible that the SMC isn't working?? I've tried idle - 1.5k settings of everything from about 30% all the way to 55%. The rest of the settings are all aobut -40%.
As far as removing the walboro, it even says in the smc instructions that an aftermarket pump is neccessary for 8+ psi.

Re: SMC + DSM 450 troubles
I sure didn't. I would like to see if anyone had a more specific idea about what it was. If noone does, I probably will change my rail and regulator back to the stock ones. If that doesn't work, I guess I'll go back to my original pump. If you look back to the things I have done already, I'm starting to think it's an electronic problem.
I'm sure there are plenty of people running a similar set-up, and I would like to get it running with all of the parts I have, instead of pulling them off. I know that it may be unavoidable, but like I said, I just wanted to see if anyone knew what it was before I started pulling things off...

I have a AFC and 440 injectors AND a walbro 255hp pump so you your intank pump should NOT be the problem.
Also I was having misfire codes CEL thrown at me fro a while after changing to AFC hack and AEM fpr... so I went back to stock FPR to see if it rids my problem and for a week now still no misfire codes.... Just food for thought. My idle pressure with the 440's + intank + stock fpr is almost 48psi with vac line connected....

Re: SMC + DSM 450 troubles
Well, I just put my stock fpr on my shiny new rail, and it works alright now. Shadow Dawn, what are your afc settings? I just want to know what you set it at idle so that it would idle.
My fuel pressure is about 40-45 psi, should I think about drilliing my regulator to allow more fuel to pass? Thanks for all the help guys.

Re: SMC + DSM 450 troubles (MintFlavored)
OK, I still can't get it to hold an idle, I can drive it around, and loosing traction in 3rd is kinda nuts. Like I said, my fuel pressure is about 40 lbs, with the vacuum line attached. Should I drill out the fuel pressure regulator? Anyone who has any experience who could help me would be great.

Re: SMC + DSM 450 troubles (MintFlavored)
My exact afc settings are posted on my website.... but honestly in my experience the 1000rpm setting on the afc does not affect my idle at ALL, from 20% to 40% it didn't make a god damn difference....
Sounds like your problems are non afc/fpr related... perhaps your dsm injectors are defunked? one or more of them? or mabye a wiring problem with a resistor pack or something?
