Run as much tire as you need. If you're having traction issues then you need some more tire or better ones. If not, then there's no need to switch things up, of course driving style plays a role in all of this, there are lots of factors and in the end trial and error are going to be your friends. Oh and hope your axles hold up too when you start running the big tires.

yes, 2nd gear is good. yank your ebrake tight and after you see smoke come up over the fenders slowly lower the ebrake and have the burnout pull you up toward the line.
tire size sort of depends on your transmission, trap speed at the end and such. you want to go through the traps up top in 4th gear. your power level you can likely use a 23" slick.
preload well and you should not have axle problems

Invest in a pair of 23" slicks. Preferably, 23x8x13 M&H's on some 13" Lenzo wheels. Your redline will be a determining factor on how deep in 4th gear you will be when you go through the traps with that GS-R tranny.
Should you decide to go that route, experiment with different tire pressures, start at around 10 psi of slick pressure and work your way down in half lb. increments until you find what works best for the car. For example, I was on 23" slicks on my old LS-T setup, and they worked pretty well at 8.5 lbs.
Good thing about slicks is when they spin, they don't hop & shock the drivetrain like street tires do (if the pressure is correct), wheel hop causes axles to break. Plus your 60 ft. times will be excellent if you launch correctly, which will give you a good E.T. with practice and seat time.
Be sure to preload the drivetrain with the e-brake, and run the hell out of it, homie. Good luck.

With the weight of the EG coupe you should see mid to high 11's all day long on 23" slicks with 335 whp & seat time. I went 12.18 @ 113 on 23's with 304 whp in a heavy *** DC!

I got my 23x8x13" slicks from Summit Racing.com. M&H Racemaster MHR04. $145.95 a piece. Look here:

EDIT: You may wanna check somewhere else, I just looked at the end of Wil's thread, and he got some serious issues going on.

Re: slick and launching question
heres the funny part, none of that was done on slicks, all bfg drag radials. 1.9 60fts always had to run it on low in the first 2 gears. it really cut my times short of the setup's capabilities. i have slicks now finally but winter is here so i have to wait till next year.

Re: slick and launching question
sorry to thread jack but it's a question that would go with the thread. I gotta boosted gsr. and on my race tune I put down 350whp/242wtrq on 16lbs. i just got 23.5x8x15 slicks at 15psi. on a dead end road with nothing around i did a 2nd gear burnout then tried launching at 3500. launched ok but as soon as boost hit they broke loose thru all 1st and most of 2nd. i know I'm gonna drop my tire pressure down to probly 10psi but my question is this. would it be better to try to launch at say maybe 6500 in 2nd and control the wheel spin with the throttle and save myself a shift? or would that be too hard on the tranny an axles? also when i tried the launch i was on my street tune of 315whp at 13lbs! so at 16lbs it'll be worse

Re: slick and launching question
With that kind of power on a good slick, you shouldnt need to do a 2nd gear burn out. Just teach yourself to feather the pedal in 1st. You can make it last long enough to heat the tires up enough to catch traction.
