Default Sleeving a D-series?

Right now I'm in the middle of building up a D16Y8 looking to make at least 300 whp turbocharged. I've seen several posts mentioning sleeving the block above 300 hp. Is it really necessary? The engine builder who's shop its at said that sleeving wouldn't be necessary from what he could tell so far, and that doing so can be expensive. He hasn't done any machining yet, but before he does I want to know for sure if the stock cylinder walls can take over 300 hp. If they can't, I might just screw the D-series and buy a B18.

Yes, stock sleeves will work. It's all about having the proper components with a good tune

So far I plan on going with 9.0:1 or lower compression pistons, stronger rods, nitrided crank, all that good stuff. Maybe even a cylinder brace but I'm not sure yet. You think I could safely make well over 300 hp on the stock sleeves with a good tune?

I am aiming for 200-250whp on stock D16Y7 sleeves. All research I have done indicates I will be OK with the stock sleeves. 300whp is not far off. You definately want to get them bored though so you're starting with a true cylinder.

They'll be fine. With the advancement in tuning capabilities, and knowledge on tuning that has spread in the last 5-6 years the evelope has been pushed further and further in terms of what can be done. The d sleeves should be able to handle 400whp pretty safely. I have tuned a stock d-series block to 250whp, stock sleeves, stock internals. The rods are the only true weak link.

Thanks. I figured the guy building my engine knew what he was talking about (he's built many engines for NASCAR and NHRA teams at all levels, and he does a lot of R&D work with other companies), but I just wanted to make sure. 400 whp sounds like a good goal to me....
