Default Sinking feeling...help me out!

Say you had a sinking feeling that your motor was about to take its last sh*t of its life. Say this motor was a b18b cradling a drag3 set-up. What would you do next, within reason?

Im thinking along the lines of a b20z (no vtec), hondata 2b, 9-10psi, and be done with it...

Help me out guys, ive got a limited budget, say under 5k, well under if i could. Should i just rebuild, new motor, b18c...?

Tom

rebuild you b block... get a vtec head.. some aftermarket low comps and crowers, hondata... run 12lbs all day everyday

b16a head... no more than 500
pistons/rings 500
crowers 600
hondata 1000

thats only half your budget... now go find a baggie of your favorite skerb to spend the other half

why would u think your motor is taking a crap?

id say just put another B18B in and either build it or just leave it stock depending on how much money you REALLY want to spend..

definitly get hondata this time around though, actually just get hondata anyways..

this is purely hypothetical/speculation type stuff. i need to get to a place to work on my car, and that won't happen till this weekend at the earliest. once ive troubleshot everything i can think of, then its time to take it to people who know more...if they say it no-mo orig b18b1, i just want to have a set plan in mind.

im not gonna do another stocker, that's for sure...

thanks guys.

Tom

hopefully its just this bad tank of gas that i gotta get through, or maybe the ignition...or, who knows. all i know is that the car stumbles till it warms up, even then its still grumpy. idles kind of rough.

new 7 series plugs gapped at .030 (old plugs looked fine when i pulled em out)
dist/cap/rot changed out less than 30k ago
timing is at 14 deg
sh*t gas in the tank
(unrelated) my clutch has started to make this really weird chirp. i have no idea what it could be. clutchnet stg2. when i take off from a start it sounds like a squeaky mattress box spring (we all know what that sounds like, right? hehe). the sound will go away once im in gear, but between changes the sound comes back. also the sound is there in gear over some bumpy stuff, but not there when im in neutral, just coasting. the squeak is almost pissing me off more than my motor.

I believe there is a group buy going on for Golden Eagle sleeves for $575... go with some 84.5mm pistons Eagle rods, and Hondata and your freakin' set!

Do the budget build Tom!

Piston/rod replacement ~$1000

Hondata for the reliability.

12-15psi

To rebuild a motor with eagle or crower rods and some good JE or Arias pistons is gonna cost you way more than $1000 the rods should roughly be about $550 pistons $500 then you'll need to have machine work done to the block new bearings have everything balanced. After all this you'll want to have the head rebuilt because who is gonna want to use a head that has tons of miles on it while the bottom end is fully built. Also after rebuilding the bottom end and spending all that money don't you think you are gonna want to replace the water pump and oil pump along with all belts and hoses. A build that you expect to only cost $1000 dollars will soon enough end up costing you an easy 5 grand, trust me I have been there. The best thing to do is to just get another stock motor and boost on it till it blows.

Tomakit,

were in the same boat. I'm getting intermiten(sp?) smoking, and my engine is making weird hissing, and brring noises. Time for another comp test.

Evo,

I tend to disagree, the engine im running now was salvaged. Without building it properly u dont really know what your rolling with. I definately will rebuild this engine.

I wonder if all of these people that are getting 84.5 sleeve realize that they will need extensive head work and custom head gaskets...

Did a quick compression test today...only on 1 cyl cause i was in a super-rush (already runnin 5 min late for class in the parking lot of my apt complex, got a few funny looks). Anyway, comp is fine, chilling at like 187 on the cyl that was at 190 like 2 months ago (car wasnt totally warm either). so i think the motor is fine, just gotta drive through this nasty a** tank of gas and find out where the hell that squeak from my clutch/tranny area is coming from.
the squeak is almost worse than what i think was happening with my motor.

so it doesn't look like ill be rebuilding anytime soon. i do forsee some changes to the entire car though, as some changes in my life neccisitate it...

Tom
thanks for the imput guys.

"um, nothing, just screwing around..." (dont come look under my hood please...)

all cyl's checked out fine.
