Default Shooting flames?

Alright ive been asking everyone that i know who is knowledgeable about cars, and havent gotten a straight up answer. What causes a turbocharged car to shoot flames? (either using a 2 step or in between shifts or letting off the throttle) ive noticed a lot of turbocharged cars will do this, not just hondas, some supras, 240's w/ sr20's, etc. what causes this? thanks.

very easy to do. Get a free flowing big exhaust with no CAT and just dump a lot of fuel....get the exhaust nice and hot and bam instant flames. I actually setup a bin in Uberdata that would do it all the time...waste of gas, but kinda cool. BTW it doesn't ahve to be turbocharged...just tuned for it.

No, because it usually happen when you're in boost or your engine underload so that mean your engine running rich. That's how unburn gas get inot the exhaust. Usually this happen with cars that are running wtihout cat.

so you have a tune for super rich to shoot flames? ive got my car tuned at about 11.5:1 a/f and it wont shoot a flame in a million years 2.5" dp, and thermal 2.5" cat back w/ testpipe...

my car has a fucked up tune and is at about 10:1a/f, it shoots the flames and loud *** back fires all day long.
sucks though because its a major waste of gas and on top that it kills the rings. just get your **** tuned right, you'll be alot more happy with it. if you really want flames, i have seen flame thrower kits on ebay ect...

If you have an AEM EMS you can tune decel specially to run rich so when you shift or decellerate it will backfire with flames while the rest of the time you run normal.

well you can do that with Hondata/Uberdata/Crome/Neptune. That's how I do it (when I want to) I just tune the very first column to be VERY VERY rich and upon decel or shift the engine gets a crap load of unburnt fuel and voila fire upon shift or decel....pretty easy

theres a STi on NASIOC that had a thread about shooting blue flames. Mostly stock, just big *** 850cc injectors, 3 inch catless, and a blow off valve. I don't know why the blow off valve makes us shoot flames. It does make my car pop alot

Yeah its a backfire but prob not a visable flame. It takes alot of fuel to carry a flame all the way down your exhaust. Its not recommended

My Monte was running a MAF before the BOV. When the BOV vented, I got 2' flames out each exhaust tip (4 of them) and a huge pop. The MAF sees all of the air that the BOV just vented and injects fuel for it. When that air doesn't enter the engine, you're instantly rich (and usually at low load) so it doesn't combust in the combustion chamber and instead ignites in the exhaust.

My S2000 does it when shifting because I told the EMS to cut ignition then fuel for the rev limiter. Usually I get a nice 2' flame out each side when shifting. I think I'm going to redo my rev limiter to a fuel cut though.

wanna shoot flames, get an rx7! i got an 87 with no cat and all i have to do is get the car warm and downshift and tap the gas at 4k or so and ill get flames out both side, if my mufflers were straight through i would get tons of flames. but for doin it in a honda get straight through pipe and make sure that when your decelerating that its not cutting fuel.

go ahead and rinse your cylinder walls down so you can kill your rings faster they are fun to watch though, lol

Power FC also has that feature. Keeps the cylinders cool and the A/F rich at all times. I like the feature, though my flames tend to draw a lot of attention when sneaking a can of whoop as on someone (Am I watching too much WaterBoy?)

Had a guy at a local car show with the AEM EMS hooked up to his 99 civic si making about 500whp. He went into some special setting that allowed him to put load on the motor without him moving, spooled the turbo, slammed the gas even harder and he had flames coming out the back of his car that were atleast 2 feet! It was pretty wicked to see at night.

pull timing and add fuel in your high vacuum tables like -24 when you let off the gas , it will dump full and boom , flames.

because you need a recirculating valve not a blow off valve , you have a mass air meter .

That's called anit-lag function. Bascially a LOT of fuel is dumped and the ignition is EXTREMLY retard to the point where the flame front travels outside the cylinder into the manifold and turbo. The resulting explosions spools the turbo very quickly and flames can be seen coming out. No load is actually placed on the engine. It's pretty bad for the manifold, exhaust valves, and turbo, but it does spool it up for a race
