Default Running without a thermostat.....

Does anyone do this? How does it effect performance? My roomate went looking for a colder thermo for his car and the guy at Schucks said to go without it and that it will run at about 160 degrees. Is this true? I would think warmup would be a bitch but I am not too sure about after.

you need some type of block thermostat there. You can do without it but your coolat system wont be effect as one with it. The reason your thermostat is there is to hold water in the radaitor long enough so it gets cooled and resent through the coolant system. What you can do is drill holes around thethermostat and run lower temp thermo.

The hole trick works fairly well.

Drilling was the other alternative he was looking at...I told him to save himself the trouble and just buy a cooler thermo. It's not like it is exactly hot up here in WA.

geoff from full race did my setup he made a custom block off plate and drill the holes for me when i was in NJ for the race motor always great after that. coolant temps run around 160 on boost unless the head gasket pops and skyrockets up

Yep with no thermostat you end up pushing coolant past critical heat areas to fast to effectively absorb enough heat and transfer it to the radiator. You'll read 160 but the actual temp will get pretty hot.

just run stock thermostat no need to drill hole or anything stock works fine if your having problems with heating up its something else i live in cali where its hot and mine runs fine half the peolple i know that have problems its cause of something else, not enough air going to the radiator, radiator cap is bad, timing issues but id say half the time its radiator cap is not holding the pressure it might sound kinda stupid but its true even if u go buy a brand new one that doesnt mean its good ive gone in and pressure tested 10 of them and only 1 out of the 10 would hold what it says it holds get a 16lbs and try it out its just a suggestine cause over heating problems r the worst so good luck man and hit me up if u need anymore info

I have a car with a big block Chevy in it that I run with no thermostat. You do have to wait for it to warm up to operation temperatures but I got about a 10F drop without the thermostat. I also switched over from 50/50 antifreeze mix to water/redline waterwetter after that and dropped another 20F. I was running at 210F before normally and now it's hard to get it past 190F at idle sitting for a while Not sure how this would apply to your type of cooling system because I'd guess that they flow different amounts and everything.
