retorqueing arp headstuds
i have my arp headstuds in my motor torqued to 65 ft lbs per the arp insturctions, im getting ready to install my turbo kit and hopeing to run around 15-20psi(with hondata 2b). i talked to a few people and they said retorque the headstuds to 78 ft lbs but other(local machine shop and engine builder) said its fine at 65. is this nessasary to do or will i be ok at the 65 ft lbs? i want to do this motor right the first time and not blow any headgaskets, also its a GE block with weisco pistons and eagle rods.
You must torque to GE specs. It goes as follows:
22 ft-lbs. Go back over all bolts and do 22 ft-lbs.
Next step.
55 ft-lbs. Go back over all bolts and do 55 ft-lbs.
Next step.
82 ft-lbs. Go back over all bolts and do 82 ft-lbs again.
Let the engine sit for a few hours, then torque them down to 82 ft-lbs.
Let the car go through 10 heat cycles. This means getting up to full heat, then cooling down completely. Go through and retorque the studs to 82 ft-lbs again.
Also, use copper spray on your headgasket. Its available at all auto parts stores. You'll need this to ensure sealing of the headgasket.
