Default Rattling noises; cannot identify, find, or diagnose.

Hello. Pretty much the topic. I've been having some rattling noise issues for a while and I did a couple things in an attempt to remedy my rattling problems but to no avail.

Changed and removed certain heat shields, the rattling is not my heat shields.

It's not a clogged or crappy cat; I don't have one.

Changed the muffler, still rattling.

It sounds like metal against metal rattling, and it only happens at about 1800 RPM and about 2500-3300 RPM. Not sure if that's just a vibration frequency that whatever is rattling is liking, but I've gone through my list of suspected issues only to find that my problem is still not fixed.

NOTE: My rubber/urythane (whatever they're made out of) motor mount bushings aren't in the best of condition and I suspect that one of them being broken may be allowing the solid mount to be vibrating against the mount brackets on the passenger strut tower. I will be replacing those within the next couple of weeks so I'll give you all a status update on that when it happens.

I have a bone stock OBD2 JDM B18C on 10 lbs boost with ARP head studs and a block guard.

Precision 1000cc with resistor box (ofc)
Precision 350hp FMIC
ebay charge pipe kit
CTR N1 crank pulley
12lb Fidanza flywheel
Competition clutch Stage 4

I've been in heated debates with many people over this N1 crank pulley. I've heard both good and bad, but mostly that if running with stock internals or unmodified internal drivetrain, that i'd be fine using the N1 pulley. Thing is, I've had the rattling since before the car was boosted and before the N1 pulley was on.

Could these rattling noises be internal? Transmission?

I also thought that maybe it could be that I welded two halves of my DP together while it was mounted to the car, so maybe small weld beads have fallen into the flex pipe at the end of the downpipe and aren't leaving, causing this rattle?

I am changing my clutch again with the mount bushings this weekend as well as going thru and checking everything else. Transmission was refurbed and only has 10k miles. Edit: I think it may be the throwout bearing for the clutch... we'll see when I take it off.

Any other ideas? Thoughts?

Thanks

-Adam

I have one of those also, but the rattling is not coming from the center or the inside of the car. I can hear it right in the engine bay when I open the tb to rev. Sounds like it's coming from right between the tranny and block. I definitely think it's the throwout bearing, since my clutch recently stopped engaging entirely. It finally gave out.

I'll take a look at my shift linkage and stuff while I'm under the car.

Thanks for the additional input.

Ditch the pulley it offers no benefits, and is well known to kill oil pumps.

I doubt the noise your hearing is crankshaft harmonics due to the pulley though. Ive got a real loud vibration around 5500rpm when im light on the throttle, its really audiable but everythign is tightand haven broke anything so ive let it be. generally when im at 550rpm im WOT and boosting anyway so...

Thanks for the input. Good to hear more veteran HT members telling me that my N1 pulley is garbage

Just ordered the ATI Super Damper - Street

My stock one is so rusted out, I said expletive it and went the ATI route. At least that way I can remove the p/s attachment when it comes in.

I'm still scared that I might have already done some damage to my oil pump parts or bearings. Idk. What are the symptoms of a bad (or dying) oil pump? Just bad oil pressure?

Yeah, just took the tranny and clutch off. Throwout bearing was trash, and the teeth on the disc were completely stripped (which is why my car wouldn't drive when put into gear, and was making a grinding noise when i let off the clutch), but the input shaft teeth are still in perfect condition.

Weird because the disc was otherwise in great condition.

Competition stage 4 and the ATI damper are now in. Purrrrrrs like a kitten.

I also took the ebay charge pipes to a machine shop and had my buddy tig weld the beads on the ends so my cuplings stop popping off at high boost. They came out pretty nice.

I should make a 'from rice to nice' build thread.
