I have fastened my flame suit... and I expect to be destroyed. But I'm in a bad mood tonight so I'm going to speak my mind very quickly:
I have no respect for any of you who do not do your own work.
Anybody who is all cocky about making 4-500hp in a Honda but turned none of the bolts (literally) to make the power, needs to re-evaluate how much of a jackass they look like as they brag to people about how fast they are... when everyone is thinking in the back of their heads "This idiot dropped 15-20k into a Honda because of labor".
Sorry, just had to rant/vent. Guys... research, building these cars is alot of fun. Buy a Helms manual. Read up on articles. You'll feel alot better about your cars if YOU are the ones to made them what they are.

Give me your opinion on this situation...I'm 19, and haven't had anyone to teach me anything about cars, but try to learn on my own and do my own work. Would you recommend just diving into a project I'm not comfortable with, or rather go ahead and pay my mechanic to do it, but request that he teach me while he does it? I think it's a better idea to watch someone do something critical the first time if you've never done it before.

Flame, who's going to flame? if you pay for labor on STUPID stuff (changing oil, bolt-on's.....) ---->>> you're taking away the fun out of fixing up your car...it's all a learning experience....
IMO i agree w/ you on this one...

Some of us dont have the time Dude, like I help with R&D mainly but my shop does most of the work cause Im always busy working. Coming up to races I take a week off to drive and help out , my shop also sponsors me so it helps but dont flame us car owners.

I strongly agree, most of my friends take their cars to the local shop to have stuff done, while I chose to wrench until the wee hours of the morning. Most of the time I don't have proper tools, but I make do. Granted I use the same shop they go to, but i do the work myself( a very good friend). I even try to get them to let me help them do mods, so they can learn, but I end up doing most of the work. Also people who just buy parts because they saw it in a movie, should be shot. PEOPLE NEED TO RESEARCH!!!! NAAWWSSSS does not exist

I'm even more hardcore than HybridKOOP. I say that if you don't sleeve your own block, and deck it by yourself with nothing but a block of wood and sandpaper, you're a POSER!!! Riceboy! You only get my respect if you ported your own heads by yourself and poured molten aluminum to form your B-series block. Bunch of wusses!

i love wrenching like the next person but if i got the $$$ you better believe i'll have someone else do it.
i think most of us do our own wrenching simply because of the love of this sport but if you think about it some do it themselves cause they cant afford to pay someone else, funny thing is sometimes you end up spending more because you did it wrong or broke something or whatever. sometimes these lessons get expensive.

i totally agree with you on the statements you made. A real classic example was that fat ****** on MTV real life im a street racer. It was the FAT *** with the mustache and had a civic or some ****. Anyways, he had that kid with the 4dr integra build his motor as well as race his car. The guy goes "he built it, he races it." **** that, that guy gets NO respect at all. A 70 yr old lady can do the same **** that he did, he knows nothing about the car, hell he cant even drive it himself because he is too fat (200+lbs then that other kid weighed). I would love to wax that ******* *** to put him in his place.

Agreed....but I have a serious shortage of tools. The only real way I can work on my car is if I take it to school and use their stuff (no, I'm not talking about power tools and lifts...I'm talking about hand tools!). But I definately feel what you're saying. It kinda reminds me of people who buy really nice cars (i.e. M3, Ferrari, Viper, Vette, whatever), and they get an automatic... Hell, they're so mechanically declined they can't even shift their own gears!
*edit* whoops...Vipers and E46 M3s have 6 speed manual trannies.

Re: r.....e.....s.....p.....e.....c.....t (mdpalmer)
I think I need to make my rant clearer... I'm not so much against people paying to have other people do the work.... I'm against the people who like to *talk talk talk* about how they're so much better and faster than everyone else is... meanwhile not knowing what motor oil is in their engine.
I know plenty of "rich" people (especially Supra owners) who pay to have the work done... but are fully aware of their setup and how it all works... and they don't run their mouths.
Whatever... I'm starting to sound like an ***.. but you guys get the point.

if everybody did their own work, this business wouldnt thrive $$$
huge dollars wouldnt flow, and if you look at the % of dollars spent
on DIY'ers vs shop charged installs, its pretty scarry.
My friend paid a local shop to install a header
i do my own work, just because im a cheap ***, id like to learn
and i wouldnt want a butcher touching my car.
besides, with the amount of resources on the net these days
people SHOULD be doing their own work
BUT not everyone is capable of it. nor do we all have the space, nor tools
lets make money off those who cant feed themselves.

PAWN SHOP my friend. Go in there and drop $100 and they will give you a full set of tools...who cares if they match...they will throw in a BJ too!
Nobody ever buys the wrenches and sockets...that stuff from them so they love getting rid of it.
