Default Quick, easy question on B-series vs D-series, timing, + the hack.

Quick question... do B series motors (b16, b18a, gsr, etc) all have to be run on premium from the factory?

My reason for asking is simply that I thought someone said a b16 / gsr / typer needed premium fuel, meaning that they would in essence need more timing retard than a D series. If this is wrong, then that is besides the point...

If at full timing advance @ WOT, my d series is running full advance meant for REGUALAR 87 octance gasoline, just the switch to premium fuel, that considered, should allow for a good amount of boost w/o timing retard- this is due to the fact that your motor was originally tuned for 87, and you've upped the octane 6pts.

SO, maybe that's why I and many other are having luck with only 2-3* of timing retard, on premium, w/ 10+ lbs of boost on a stock block. It makes sense to me.

DOHC VTEC's require premium in part because of their elevated compression (10:1, 10.2:1, 10.6:1 etc..), whereas the lower compression B18B and D-series can get away with regular without problems.

Thanks, that's what I wanted to hear. So you definatley can run more boost on a SOHC / DOHC non-vtec due to this w/o retarding the timing (as much, if at all)
