Default Question on shaft play

shaft play is indicated by the amount of movement you can induce with your fingers im guessing from the blue point going in either direction of the red arrows correct?

yeah,

also in and out sometimes has play.

but the biggie is that if those fins ever touch the turbine housing.. its bye bye turbo!

Side to side play is normal on regular turbos, it's end play that means the turbo is on it's way to being junk. For side to side play I have had good luck using turbos with about a business card thickness of side play and no end play.

Also, there will be some play in a turbo when theres no oil in it, or oil pressure..

ooh, i see so ill have to hook it up and turn the engine over a few times to get the oil threw it to determine true play? im working with a t25 from a 94-97 GSX no sure exact year anyway its off the motor and dp and thier appeared to me to be alot of side to side play so i was wondering.

if you just pour a little in the feed side it will come through when you spin the wheels a little. then it should be a bit tighter.

remember also if it is a greddy turbo, there will seem like there is some play due to the cartridge bearing design..

what if you hear a little squeaking noise coming from those fins in the pic when you rev the motor? could that mean that the oil isn't getting enough oil?

what is end play? how do you check for that.

just wondering cause i never really knew this stuff.

I believe end play could also be refferred to as end-to-end play.

Basicaly its when you pull the shaft in and out, as opposed to side to side play.

there should definetely be less in/out than side to side imo.

someone else can add more to this though.

what would be the cause of the fins rubbing on the housing when the motor is reved up high? bad bearings or what? would it need a full rebuild?

you sure they're rubbing?
does it smoke at all?
can you see any scoring/scratches on the housing or fins?

it sounds like it. i hear a squeaking noise sometimes when i rev the egine. it does it sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. i'm getting the oil light on, so i'm wondering if the oil is getting to the turbo also.

i will have to check again to see if i see any wear on the fins. if the fins are touching, what would need to be done to it?

oh yeah....there's no smoke.

i'm going to need to change my oil pressure sensor deal. so when i do that. i'm going to make sure the oil feed line isn't clogged or something and i'm going to reroute the feed line also.

in the meantime, the car is parked and not driven.

yeah.. could spell turbo death if you have no oil going to it, and the fins are touching.

but that sound could very well be something else.

all the t25's I have ever seen have had alot of shaft play left to right... go figure.

btw the fins touch and you might as well trash the compressor wheel... and before you do that you should buy a new unit and throw away the rest of the t25.
